if it has the quality of songwriting behind it - it can work beautifully.
but that's few & far between.
still, about 90% of every kind of music is shit. you just have to root around for the creme de la creme..

i'd be wary of going down the whole "ohhh guitars are SOOOOO OOveeerr" path..
it comes dangerously close to making you sound like someone who actually pays attention to fads & fashions in music.
whatever's new & 'cutting edge' at any one time is only what the spotlight is shining on.. everything else is still going on, same as it always has. (hence the emergence then disappearance then reemergence of drum & bass - the djs, producers and clubbers never stopped what they were doing though)
people were saying live music & guitars were out when they were developing the first synths.
people said turntables were a thing of the past when they made dat tape.. then mcs.. then cds.. vinyls still going strong enough to warrant being pressed up.
as a couple of people have said - if the songs are good enough, there will always be guitars.
personally, i feel that diversity is a good thing. and besides, if it sounds good, then it is good - however it was made.

Fennesz Kevin Drumm Joseph Suchy Rafael Toral Oren Ambarchi Keith Fullerton Whitman Doron Sadja Burkhard Stangl Keith Rowe Martin Siewert Christopher Willits Ben Chasny etc.

I can understand just not "liking" the range of sounds that an instrument makes (one of my friends simply cannot listen to any music featuring violins, it makes him physically nauseous), but to say an instrument is boring... well, i believe you're just not listening to the right kinda stuff.
Instruments are incredibly versatile things... just because some people use the guitar in a dull or tired way, doesn't make guitars themselves inherantly boring.

The universe revolves around the guitar. There's an infinite amount of great guitar music to dig through dating back to... as far as the instrument has existed. Straightforward and not so straightforward. Hell, I get off just playing along with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers blues jams.
