Hi friends, I was bored, and had some fun pitting these two jerks against eachother again; please check it out. I was messing around a lot and it should make for a fun read. At least look at the pictures and download...
I used Gradius 3 (SNES) boss music for all tests. Discuss that at least! It's all over the place.

you know, you should paste the encoded audio over the original - inverted - wave files, and THEN run a fourier over it. that way youll be able to see only the differences between the original and the source file

Yeah, I was dicking around with tools I have at the moment though (no sound editing shit). If I ever come back to it properly, like I said I'll figure out a proper comparison heuristic and just go from scratch with that.
did you do that when you were dicking arond upon purchasing your iriver?

no i didnt care about mp3 vs ogg, it could play both
i started to check the differences afterwards
on an unrelated side note, are pi or e 's decimals random? i tought they were but im not sure anymore

there's been no pattern found so far (unless I'm retarded); it still requires massive computational effort to squeeze out more digits.
As far as whether they are truly random--as in, you could use them as the source of a random number generator with a good distribution--I don't know.

It's clear that ogg is technically better in every way but to my ears an mp3 encoded in lame w/ alt-preset standard is perfect.

i hope so
there would be a part that represents a image of me somewhere
chance of finding it is infinitly small, but who cares
somewhere in there is my face!

By the way, from wikipedia:
The most pressing open question about π is whether it is normal, i.e. whether any digit block occurs in the expansion of π just as often as one would statistically expect if the digits had been produced completely "randomly". This must be true in any base, not just in base 10. Current knowledge in this direction is very weak; e.g., it isn't even known which of the digits 0,...,9 occur infinitely often in the decimal expansion of π.

I've heard that the apple AAC encoding is nice--anyone care to confirm/disprove this?
I really should redo those tests properly..
PS Jaroen, if I do so, I'll look into whether applying the fast fourier when I did actually makes comparisons more sensitive..
