The purpose of this topic is to praise Van Morrison, for 2 main reasons.
1- for having such a lengthy and consistent solo career. He's putting out good albums to this day. His list of AAA albums is staggering, and most know at least Moondance and Astral Weeks.
2- for being an imtimidating young howlin' badboy with Them.
Probably known best for Brown Eyed Girl and the Moondance title track, but I can't think of anyone that has a voice that lends itself more to being one tough woman-threatening rascal than him. That's my favorite Van, he sounds so tough and mean and raw, one of the best voices ever. I do like his solo stuff quite a bit (particularly Tupleo Honey), and he does the introspective songwriter bit with more balls and emotion than most. But his voice could be pushed harder. He could be meaner... and leaner (just joshin' ya, Van, ya fast ol' bastard!). Wicked enigma.
APPRISHIATE
Best thing he ever did- The Angry Young Them.
He's so intimidating, there's a certain REAL rock and roll aura about him. A real presence, same caliber as Robert Stack and Gregory Peck. I remember just getting into him via his ''best of'' (they are very useful, don't listen to naysayers) he was glaring at me with steely eyes and pronounced sculpted nose. And nobody ever sees him, he's a real mystery man. So rootsy and raw, it's like nobody could possibly beat him up or ''out-root'' him. I don't know how large he is, physically, but he looks so mean. A smile? Never, unless you catch him at an unguarded spontaneous moment in a concert. I bet he swallows his toothpicks without even bothering to chew them.
I don't care that he isn't electronic. He's the kind of guy that bullies people that make electronic music, because he can. If you like the Van, let me know... and let him know, if he's reading.

you make a strong case, ophecks. unfortunately, i am not a fan of the van.
i do have a hilarious mp3 of van morrison performing some improvisational pieces for his record label entitled, "Ring Worm/You Say France And I Whistle/Want A Danish"

Astral Weeks <3
Them's stuff is great too. I have a REALLY old Them vinyl I kinda inherited from my mom, and the scratches and crackles and crap make it all the better.
I would not describe Van the man as consistent though. More grumpy than consistent.
Also I recommend you to track down a demo track he recorded to fill contractual obligations called Ringworm.

i only really know Van through his singles and maybe one or two albums that my parents had that i listened to as a kid (Avalon Sunset, and maybe Moondance)... but i still think he's way cool... sweet songs: "Everyone", "Jackie Wilson Said", "Baby Please Don't Go", and "Moondance"...

He's putting out good albums to this day
That second sentence is just so utterly wrong. You're the first person i've come across who thinks that.... I think his albums were, for a while, consistently brilliant, then everything just went down the tubes.

None of his recent albums has struck me as anywhere near bad... not anything I'd listen to more than once or twice but totally inoffensive and safe. Surely he's pleasing his target audience. He's got a few clunkers (most of which I haven't heard because, well, they're clunkers and I never bothered hearing them), but so does everybody who's been making music for 4 decades.

Van Morrison is completely brilliant.
For the people who only ever heard moondance, and brown eyed girl, you are so missing out.
Inarticulate speach of the heart, is a synthesizer driven completely brilliant album
Into the music, fuck this is one of my alltime fav albums.
You must give this a chance!

Appreaciating Van Morrison takes some time. My brother got a thing for him, and played it constantly. I thought it was boring at first, but learned to appreciate how fucking brilliant it is.
