Wednesday, BBC1, 10.35pm

As part of the Imagine... series, there will be a
documentary on Coltrane, celebrating the 40th Anniversary of
his Album, A Love Supreme. There will also be a
discussion of Coltrane's influences. Should be good!

thanks for pointing this one out. will definitely be

missed the hopper doc, but caught a long + detailed
discussion of his work on radio4 which preceeded the tv doc
by about a week. was interesting.

ALSO!!

my dad just told me this - those of you who have bbc 4,
there's a miles davis/john coltrane/gil evans concert from
the 50s being shown at 11.15pm on wednesday also.

HOORAY!

i'd record it and upload it and that sort of shizzle but -

1) no tv turner card in the pc
2) no broadband

perhaps someone with the ability could record it for those
of us (me not included :D:D:D) who don't have bbc4?

comp.

has anyone actually heard the most recent "A Love Supreme"
reissue? i'm pretty sure it has a couple of extra reworkings
of the opening track which feature archie shepp (which could
be really interesting)... enjoy your documentary you lucky

I hear he is releasing a new studio version of it, not the

and this show on bbc4 looks sweet too, it's the show from
which the footage of 'so what' was taken for the documentary

i was hoping this was gonna be a concert, rather than a
studio performance. Everyone seemed a bit... distracted,
like they wanted to be somewhere else.

Paul Chambers was amazing on bass tho :)

what I especially hate about BBC 4 is that about 40% of
airtime on BBC 2 is taken up with promo's for for BBC fuckin
4.

offline acrid milk hall from United Kingdom on 2004-06-17 02:17 [#01244133]

yay..
that was a nice show. i was more interested in coltrane's
artistic development than in how many people have opened
churches in his honour though.

i don't have bbc 4, was the concert good?

offline Anus_Presley on 2004-06-17 03:39 [#01244228]

i did seem to skim over some pretty radical developments in
jazz music.

That was great. Didn't see the concert though.

The bit when they had lyrics from the final movement of A
Love Supreme scrolling across the screen, while Trane
'played the lyrics' on his sax was a real BAM! moment for
me. Quite powerful.

yeah - that kind of stuff was good.

could have done with more of it though.

offline mylittlesister from ...wherever (United Kingdom) on 2004-06-17 09:05 [#01244698]
Points: 8472 Status: Regular

yeah, light on info, but its made me want to listen to more
coltrane. I've never really listened to much of his solo
stuff - as shocking as that may seem!

It made me take out my copy of 'A love supreme' for maybe
the first time in a year or so. I'd forgotten what a
mind-blowingly good album it was.

Blue Train is great too, I'm not that keen on Giant
Steps though...

"lyrics from the final movement of a love supreme" ?

was it the prayer he wrote for the inner sleeve?

Yeah.

If you listen to the lines he traces out in the final
movement, phonetically and rhythmically, they are the
words.

I'd never noticed that before...
