i reckon...

it sounds different because your senses are heightened and
you're more aware of certain sounds and scapes. some music
is perfect for tripping, but it's not necessarily 'better'
on drugs. you just listen to things differently and
appreciate it in a different way. it's all part of the
experience, i guess.

"it sounds different because your senses are
heightened

that's an illusion.

nooo!

it takes a while to get into, but the feeling you get when
it finally all falls into place and makes sense is amazing!

long time ago

everything is different when your not stright, even with
alcohol

if you've ever been sober when everyone else is pissed you
can see it. People laughing at things that just arnt funny
etc, but you know that if you were pissed youd probably find
it funny too =o)

And if you watch a film when your stoned and you think it
great, sometimes you'll watch it straight and think it's
crap

same with music

It could sound better... your standards are lowered
signifigantly. I prefer to be sober minded, because... well,
I'm not sure. Maybe I'm afraid of being enlightened, and
being a higher being, one wth the universe, where everything
makes sense and horrible shit becomes pretty darn good.

When Im on DXM, I tend to listen to mininmal Techno, and
suddenly it all makes sense, its like the DJ is trying to
TELL a story, by layring diffrent songs and adding new
elements...

I reckon it does heighten what you can hear in a way, can
always pick out new sounds when twisted. But then that
happens when straight too with good music. I've got
completely lost in music before when under the influence and
just kind of woke up in silence goin', wtf, repeatedly.

offline morge from United Kingdom on 2004-06-10 06:24 [#01232657]

you can see meaning in the world more easily when stoned, so
music becomes really meaningful.
for me, listening whilst high each sound is like some grand
event, songs sound much longer so you get the illusion that
there is more detail.
also, yeah your senses are more heightened and your
attention is grabbed by things that normally just go by the
by. little sounds in a song suddenly jump out.

offline soundguy from London (United Kingdom) on 2004-06-10 07:51 [#01232765]

cos of the heightened senses, but this doesn't apply to all
music, I find I like a lot of minimilistic stuff whilst
wasted that I don't enjoy when sober but I can't listen to
any guitar based stuff like Radiohead cos it sounds shite

Music sounds better when stoned. Well most of it does, rap
doesn't really. IDM is the best music to listen to when
stoned, because you tend to focus on details a lot more.

On amphetamines energetic music is fun becasue well, you're
generally fairly energetic and it's fun to dance around to
but you won't feel like sitting down and listening to
lexaunculpt like you will when you're stoned. On comedowns I
hate listening to music.

On E well... happy music gets really emotional. BoC is
nice.

Acid for me is kinda the same as weed, but I hate listening
to dark things on acid as I start feeling dark and edgy.
Once again BoC is cool

Fuck listening to music on acid, last time I did that I
thought the melody was attacking me

well, i definitely enjoy it more when stoned. dunno why
though, it just sounds even better, although it sounds great
when sober too.

I haven't XTC'd for ages (and don't intend to) but when i
hear a song that blew me away on pills.. you know, blissed
out techno, i still get stomach cramps and rushes and stuff.
It's placebo of course but the result is the same... i can't
help it.

electronica always sounded amazing though - afx,
squarpusher, Ae etc. Never needed drugs for "da boys".

In no way should anyone ever NEED drugs to like music - but
sometimes.... just SOMETIMES..... they can bring a song into
like about fifteen dimensions and fully blown dolby digital
surround sound and videoclips of old nintendo games play in
your head while you you sit there trying not to blow your
load foaming at the mouth going "fucking sweet, man"

i think it's a valid way of hearing something in a new way,
esp. something you've listened to a million times and think
you know inside out.

case in point...two weeks ago i spent an entire weekend
smoking out and painting my apartment. now, i don't smoke
that often...maybe once every couple of months. i decided
to do an aphex blowout and play everything i had. i came
out of it with an increased appreciation for the emotional
power of the songs. maybe it didn't have anything to do
with drugs, maybe it was the paint.

but anyways i had a great time...hanging out with myself,
getting relaxed, and my bedroom looks sweeeeet.

oh, i listened to califone too. i forgot.

i agree with people on the sense of hearing being heightened
when stoned, ie. you hear more (natural result of paranoia)

BUT...

I like vsnares a lot when straight, but when stoned...

OH MY GOD DOES IT PISS ME OFF!!!

I like Merzbow a lot when straight.

when stoned i couldn't give a shit, but when pissed i just
might be forced to spew.

becomes a treat and I begin to appreciate music I'm not that
