Movies as a critique of society?

Ok.. I'm going to go outside of what I normally do, and
ANALYZE something...

I don't like analyzing, but as I was watching "the bone
collector" on tv yesterday, I started thinking about that
classical thing where the superior is extremely stupid and
always fucks it up for the extremely intelligent person that
works for him.

So many films has this as a part of them, and while it, in
some movies, has a comical purpose, it can also be
interpreted otherwise... in the bone collector, for example,
Denzel Washington plays a crippled, but brilliant
crime-scene investigator that, in spite of being in bed all
day, is still employed by the police so that the
insurance-company can pay for his nurse and equipment. His
boss is portrayed as a stupid
"no-outside-of-the-box-thinking" guy that ruins the entire
investigation PLUS gets himself killed towards the end.

Now, that is only one example among many.. why is it so that
so many movie-directors (and especially in USA) chose to put
the stupid superior in their movie?

The first thought that occured, was that it is a critique of
how things are done, and how they see their superiors
(people at the film-studio, and so-on). This could, of
course, also be extended to the rest of the society
(police-enforcers, government, and so-on).

The second theory is that it is a way of telling "the little
man" that "you can do it! you are smart, and your superiors
are dumb," which would kind of make sense, since "the little
men" (hereafter referred to as "inferiors") clearly
outnumber superiors (1 superior to 10 inferiors (the
superiors often have superiors over them again as well...)),
and thus, the movie appeals to larger audience.

Now, the problem with the second theory is that it doesn't
make EVERYONE seem like a hero, it puts this single person
out there as the hero.. this ONE person that is smarter and
better than everyone else. Teamwork isn't really an option
for this character, except for in certain instances where
the character notices a bit of him/herself in another person
and decides to take on that person as an apprentice... The
other teamwork-instances are when the smart person has a
dumb or dumber companion that is sent to do the dirty-work..
this companion takes all the shit and often dies so that the
intelligent one can get angry and still remain cool and
clear-minded, and in the end, get revenge for the loss of a
dear friend. The bad thing about this is that if anyone
indentifies with the main character, teamwork will still not
be an option. As I said earlier, this is most often seen in
American movies, and I think it kind of explains partly what
is going on over there... if this is correct, movies are
pretty influential when it comes to how people act.

Commercial movies (most of the movies then) just give people
what they want to see. Escapism etc. The main characters are
usually average joes because everyone can project their
personality to that. Teamwork is an excuse for a comic
relief or what you wrote-a plot device. Of course that
doesn't always occur in movies. Steven Seagal for example is
hardly your average person. But sometimes people just like
to watch the ultra violence and only that.

i've never seen "Forest Gump" cos i just think a film about
a mental retard who "makes it" is really fucking
silly........

"Badauh... am a stupid... dang"

"Congratulations young man, your business is a success"

crap

yeah, sure it's what the people want to see, but this was
kind of spawned by those violent film and computer game
things that have been popping up and down since GTA1. It is
all a part of my past, and therefore in my thoughts at all
times. I think that, if the people that complain about such
things are right, most movies are too questionable to ever
be released. Therefore, those people are now proven wrong (I
had written lots of stuff, but then I wanted to see if
someone had already replied, and I lost it.. but this small
thing captures the essence, at least as a reply to your
post...)

Hyakusen: no, I can't, but I thought I should do one of
those large posts at least once...

I totally love movies in which the main characters are
extremely extravagant like Takashi Miike films.

I believe that people enjoy violence anyway. Maybe this
desire for blood has grown a bit with over exposure but it
was already there in the audience. I don't think I
understand your post except for the first paragraph.

interesting read mr mastah. i basically agree with you and
doomed puppy. clearly there are more and less subtle
invocations of fantasy in hollywood film... it's not that
much of a stretch for the average joe to imagine himself as
tom hanks, much more to be steven seagal, but of course both
are multimillionaires and pretty damn far from your average
american joe.

films with extreme violence etc in are unlikely to inspire
violence unless in people with pre-existing
psychopathological. much like how weed smoking does not
cause schizophrenia, but it may cause a latent psychotic
tendency to manifest itself.

i think letting teenagers see films with people smoking in
has a much more damaging effect on public health. whenever i
see a film with smoking in i'm desperate for a fag when i
get out of the cinema!

*psychopathological = psychopathology. (or antisocial
personality types)

oh.. the second sentence could have been a parenthesis,
'cause it was just an explanation of why I thought about the
discussion over GTA1 now, since that is very old, and then,
if people REALLY get affected by such things as games and
movies, the age-limit on all movies should be 90+

No. I've read the manga though. The movie was better because
it had the WTF editing that Miike uses. He's made lot's of
crazy and really funny films. And the messages he gets
through are always cool.

oh.. I had hoped anyone had seen the animé, 'cause I saw it
in the dvd-shop, and I wondered if it would be worth
getting...

"if people REALLY get affected by such things as games and

no way... I mean even alcohol is legal and that is already
proven to affect people (it can't all be in our minds, can
it? I mean people do get drunk, for real)
Also rather than banning imagination; ban real life (e.g.
ban violence not violent movies).

well.. violence IS banned, but it didn't help.

I'm not FOR banning movies, I'm just saying that from the
people that say that movies have such an effect on people's
view, that would be the final thing to do...

jesting goes as jesting goes.. the main part of this thread,
however, is not jesting, but when I jest, I jest as usual.
