Tracks 2 on 5 on any album are invariably the best. Most of
the time. Here is some proof:

Kate Bush - The Sensual World

2. Love and Anger
5. Heads We're Dancing

Aqua - Aquarium

2. My Oh My
5. Doctor Jones

Stop. Very quietly back away. Nobody post. It will
disappear soon enough.

2 and 5 makes 7. I think Patrick Bateman needs a B7:)

but actually this thread is funny.

i actually think there's something in this, the track 5
thing is unlikely, but tracks 1 and 2 on an album (not
really IDM, more rock) often have a particular quality.

track 1 has to grab you by the balls tight, and not let go
for three minutes. usually one of the strongest tracks in
its sonic impact, but light on structure cos it's usually
short.

track 2 is the big one, the big epic single, the centrepiece
of the album.

i haven't bothered with examples because we could spend all
day coming up with examples and counterexamples, it's just a
very slight trend so there's no point.

oh ok fuck it: reacquaint yourself with the radiohead
albums...

mappatazee > lol^^

no, seriously, it's just an impression. try checking all
your albums for the best tracks, THEN see if it's always
tracks 2 and 5...

there has been also other topics about track 3 being
undeniably the best, or track 6, or... etc.

it seems like people have a tendency to seek for rules, make
rules and to force things to fit in their rules (consciously
or unconsciously), to avoid incertitude... they even talk
about "exceptions confirming the rules", which is totally
contradictory and doesn't mean anything (or if it means
anything, i don't see it!!)... just accept it, you can't fit
and rule everything.

A random 6 selected from my collection (they just happen to
be sitting on my desk right now):

One Dove: Morning Dove White
 best tracks: 1 and 2

Lucky Jim: Our Troubles End Tonight
 best tracks: 3 and 5

Mark Lanegan: Whiskey For the Holy Ghost
 best tracks: 5 and 7

Autechre: Tri Repetae
 best tracks: 3 and 10

Pinkie Maclure: Favourite
 best tracks: 2 and 5

Seefeel: Succour
 best tracks: 4 and 6

So 1 out of 6. Either you are wrong or I'm just out of
kilter from everybody else's reality. Either way I'm happy
about it!

Ha!

Autechre: Tri Repetae
best tracks: 3 and 10

pah!
in fact, tri rep fits the 2 and 5 rule perfectly IMO.

but as uzim said, our minds are always looking for trends,
and once you've identified one you'll recognise the evidence
confirming it far more readily than you'll recognise
evidence disconfirming it.

eliminating cognitive dissonance

I always think that track 3 is the best. Not gonna give any
examples, just accept that what I say is right, and you are
wrong.
