does anybody here use sibelius? is it possible to import a
midi file into it and it will automatically score it? can i
get a hold of a copy off anybody? i really need it for a
university assignment...

You can do that in cubase. Open the midi > score editor.

If it's possible in Cubase, then yes, it's possible in
Sibelius. It's even possible in my good ol' Digital
Orchestrator Plus.

it's possible in both cubase and sibelius.

Marlowe has used it. I've had a brief go, promised I'd come
back to it to score "Vanilla Hub" for 3 violins, but I never
did :)

It's possible in pretty much any half decent MIDI sequencer,
so it should be possible in Sibelius or Finale as well.

however? i really want to avoid using the macs at uni...

Yes, I have Sibelius and it will create a score if you
import a MIDI file - It will ask you a few brief questions,
and then create it for you :)

cheers.. how is it with really wierd off time stuff tho? i
presume it sorts out all the intricacies for you? theres
just a whacked key mashing bit when the piece just dies at
the end...

well you can easily remedy it - it depends on the quality of
the MIDI used, or the software which created the MIDI --
sometimes when I make scores from Mario pieces, instead of
showing "rall." when a piece slows down, you'll get a whole
bunch of squashed-together tempoes :D But it's just text and
you can delete them, and add the appropriate phrase in the
stead :)

yeah, I do all my 'classical' scores in sibelius... most def
converts the midi to score.

if the parts arnt quantized... it will be a bitch... it will
make the notes 64th notes, and 32nd notes etc.... the exact
midi positions as if in a sequencer.

youll also need to put in your own dynamics/articulations if
need be.

its core musicianship for my bachelor of music... i have to
write a piece for my group to play live, and since they are
all performers they insist that i give them sheet music...
which is quite hard especially with the style of music i
write... i was just having a hard time scoring it by hand...

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2004-06-02 12:36 [#01219761]

oh sweet, what kind of piece is it?

and yeah, I hate writting it by hand.

My life is so dependent on computers now, for better or for
worse... :-\

where are you studying?

im doing a bachelor of music, specialising in composition...
at the queensland university of technology... this piece im
doing for this... well its a noise piece really... somewhere
between fennesz' rivers of sand and something off
draft730... if i HAD to describe it... the teachers love me,
all the other students think im insane, its cool :)

awesome.

I was doing a duel major in synthesis and composition, but I
got tired of the academia of the composition major. BS
papers and analysis... I took most of the composition
classes (and learned alot, and really enjoyed them), but the
analysis ones where just a pain.

And I also didnt want to do a fifth year.

cool the teachers like it!

I'm jealous of you people doing a music-related course. I
would probablt have done something similar if it weren't for
there being virtually no market for it in this area, so I
chose something that offers me a better chance for a job.

it depends what you do... and what you are willing to do.

personally, I hope to make a living doing commercial
production... music for commercials, sound design etc.

you can def find jobs (and they pay well) its just a matter
of having a steady flow of work!

and for the record, no I dont think thats "selling out"

i would be fine with that, and i think it would be fun.

also Id get to work at home, so I could work on my own stuff
more as well.

i def want to release my own music, but as I think everyone
here can understand, theres not much money to be made in IDM
etc... so I need some source of income, might as well put my
skills to use.

I actually got a pretty sweet gig this summer... ;)

Well, the part about courses like yours that I find very
positive is that you are taught programs such as Max/MSP and
Cubase and what not. It takes a LOT of effort to learn that
shit on your own and I definately think that it makes it
easier if someone teaches you it.

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2004-06-02 15:44 [#01220006]
Points: 14042 Status: Lurker

oh hell yes.

I agree 100%

when I tried to learn csound, there was just somethings I
needed for someone to clear up, to make me understand it
better. I didnt progress with it, until I took a class

That's what I mean.

They either don't offer courses like that here (not even in
non-scholar environments) or they would be MEGA expensive.

Woe.

I was there before, in highschool... long story short, I

to enjoy the culture....

Apart from that, by now you'll know that amsterdam is also a
beautiful city to just visit, with its unique lay-out and
architecture. Hope you'll have a good stay there!
