Ickle baby Vaio.

NB: Buying a Sony Vaio will not make your music making as
good as his. Sorry.

he used to use a PowerBook, back in the RDJ Album days, but
he's shifted onto a Vaio.

I wouldn't mind getting one of those really small Vaio
machines for a PC setup, you know the one that's got a small
widescreen display and a webcam on the top of the display?

I think that'd be a great live little setup to go along with
my PowerBook and my girlfriend's iBook :)

why?

And do you know if he is still mac or pc in the studio?

dunno why, probably just personal preference. maybe he uses
software that you can't get for Mac, such as fruity loops or
something.

i've no idea if he has a specific preference in the studio
though. i'd guess that he's got both systems, so he's got
flexibility to use whatever tool he needs to get the job
done

:)

to be honest, i've not really seen many people use a
computer in a live situation.

I saw Gary Numan was using a TiBook on So Graham Norton a
few months back, and there was some guy from the 80's doing
a come back promo on TOTP and he had a TiBook also.

I know for a fact that Trent Reznor is an Apple only guy.
He's got something like 5 G4 towers, and at least one
TiBook.

he's probably got a 17" AlBook and a triple processor G5 by
now!

cubase sx 1.01

sony vaio srx7
vx pocket 440

powerbook too

vaio is shit. when my girl was buying a lap, we have to
choose between Sony vaio and Compaq Presario ( 2100 ) .
vaio could lick the feets of compaq, really. and we choosed
properly.

besides, sony entered computer bussines not so long ago,
they cant be as good as youre talking.

yeh, that figure is probably closer to what he actually has
:)

I read somewhere that he always gets offers from PC software
companies to endorse their product, and he turns round and
says "why don't you do the right thing, and make it for the
Mac?"

heh

anyways, i saw a recent pic of Leo Herrera with a 15" AlBook
here (scroll down a bit)

no-one is praising Vaio's particularly.

i just stated that i'd like the really compact one, because
it'd fir perfect with a live setup and my living quarters. I
will always prefer a portable system over a full size
desktop system. And i would prefer a small PC laptop,
because i could use Remote Desktop on my Mac to control it
through Ethernet

i know nothing of sony vaios, but just about every comapaq i
have ever seen was total crap. cheap ass components, and
horribly packed full of useless demos and turdy software.

if i came across a sub-notebook that wasn't by sony, that
had a better spec, then i'd use that instead. it doesn't
really bother me much, as long as i can get hold of a
sub-notebook that works well i don't care :)

unfortunately most PC computers nowadays come preinstalled
with garbage and junk, that is if you buy from somewhere
like PC World or something.

i think the only way that you can get a Laptop that comes
with useful software on is if you go to a computer supplier
that specializes in configuring custom setups for your
requirements

yeah. you're totally right. but, the couple of compaqs i
have seen were much worse than the prepackaged dells that we
get at work.

i'm not touting dell or anything, because i'm one of those
dorks that builds his own machine, but dayam compaqs are
coming with fuckloads of game previews, aol, earthlink, msn
subscriptions, yadda, yadda.. all preinstalled and scattered
all over the place. not to mention the fact that they're
all using some kmart brand motherboards with integrated
modems and soundcards and whatnot. good luck upgrading
hardware... or even finding drivers if something perhaps
goes wrong.

dell does seem to use somewhat standard components in their
machines.

well where the integrated motherboard issue is concerned,
i'm afraid it's the way of the future :(

you see it more and more nowadays - you get motherboards for
desktop/tower systems that have integrated modem, NIC,
graphics, sound. i hate them, because the integrated
graphics usually need to swallow up some of your RAM to use
as VRAM.

with laptops though, there's very little that you can
upgrade, because of the small form factor and the difficulty
in actually performing the upgrades, so usually the only
upgradable part of the machine is the RAM.

No Trent isn't just a mac guy! Damn, you Mac users are real
zealots ;)

Macs are the main part of the setup but he also used a
couple of PCs on some releases, for PC only shareware progs
like Audiomulch. He liked the sound destroying ability of
PCs...

"Trent's studio complex has no shortage of Macintosh
computers, but PCs were integrated into the studio setups
along the way. "About halfway through the album, a couple of
us bit the bullet and got Windows machines," Charlie says,
"because there is a lot of shareware-level audio software
for PCs that we wanted to try. Programs like AudioMulch and,
on the professional side, [Native Instruments] Reaktor,
Generator, and Transformator, which are modular
synthesizer-type situations in software that offer a
different set of module choices that what you get in a Nord
Modular. We also got the Pulssar audio card from Creamware,
and I believe on one song we actually used the simulated
Minimoog that comes with the Pulsar. We mostly used the PCs
for audio processing and drone creation. Basically it was a
whole new world. I mean, we didn't learn most of these
programs from top to bottom; it was more like, plug it in,
bring it up on the console, and see if anything interesting
comes out. You know, you're putting in a vocal, and what's
coming out is a small crackling sound. The PC< with all
these strange shareware programs, provided just another
color to the spectrum. But we still did all our sequencing
and audio recording on the Macs. The Logic Audio/Pro Tools
combo is a lot more evolved on the Mac, and many more
plugins exist. Plus, we kept breaking our PCs' operating
systems by installing audio drivers and shareware stuff, so
we didn't rely on them too much." "

From this article.

Okay so that is Charlie speaking, but even if Trent hasn't
used it himself, he has let his underlings sully their hands
with PCs, and there are PCs used on The Fragile at least.
Personally, I'm not convinced a notorious control freak like
Mr. Reznor would let his engineers process his stuff without
him even knowing/understanding what they were up to. ;0)

im using a compaq presario 2100 as we speak and i love mine,
it didnt come with much useless crap, doesn't ever crash,
and runs everything i really need (unless ive got like 4
absynths running with multiple effects of each, that turns
into a little bit of a problem)
