.flac anyone?

does anyone know of a client and/or site that supplies lots
of .flac files, particularly strong in the IDM and ambient
genre? soulseek isn't much of a help (all im getting are
phish and nirvana .flacs ... woop-dee-doo) ...
in specific, im looking for the new pan sonic (kesto) in
.flac. but anything else would be good :)

oh shush. i will buy it eventually, but SOME OF US ARE JUST
OUT OF UNIVERSITY and are very short on cash. food comes
first. music comes second. when the economy gets better and
the job rolls in, then i can buy it. but for now, there are
a lot of people who are in my position that don't have much
cash and it isn't necessarily fair to subject them to shitty
lossy versions of music that they enjoy.

You don't have 15 spare dollars? You have enough to pay for
internet access, and since you want flacs, I'm assuming
you're on high speed.

$15 dollars? are you kidding me? i dont know what state
you're from, but HERE IN CANADA the price is about $40ish,
if im lucky. and don't try to push that 'well duh, order it
in the states through some mailorder bs' because there is
this thing called duty tax and provincial tax that i have to
add on top of the exchange rate.

immediately hosed.

sorry i just have a strong dislike for the annoying lossless
files fanatics. not saying you're one, just saying a 192kbps
mp3 is a more than good enough alternative to actual cds.
check the link i mentioned above, though. i got some great
concerts from that site.

yeah i totally understand what you mean, but to assume that
someone is looking for lossless rips for the mere fact that
they think it's 'better' b/c of the sound is really
prejudging the situation. personally, i wanted to find these
files to check out what they really sound like, out of pure
curiousity. not necessarily to be an audio snob. but audio
snobs surround 80% of this message board. so it shouldn't be
a surprise to have a question based around lossy/lossless
formats. :)

i'm not trying to offend anyone here, but i agree with
Netlon Sentinel.

jenf, you say that you will eventually buy the material, but
for the moment you'd like a decent quality copy of it? Well,
by demanding a "lossless" format you are pretty much
implying that you do not intend to buy the material on cd,
because if you were gonna buy it, a 192Kbps or higer
MP3 or an AAC would suffice until you could get hold of the
CD.

Why would someone want to use flac files?

My mummy always used to tell me when I was a kid: "Buy the
fucking CD, rip it and put the wavs in a separate folder.
There ya have it! LOSSLESS FILES HONEY!!"

I honestly don't understand how people can tell the
difference between mp3s and .flac/.shn etc, as long as the
mp3s are 192kbps or better. I've downloaded some .flac
torrents because they're the only format I can find, but I'd
honestly prefer mp3s. Smaller and more convienent for
burning, playing, etc.

just to clarify, i totally think you should buy the cd. i
just didn't understand why this thread generated flames,
while tons of other p2p threads do not.

i can tell the difference between a 160Kbps MP3 and a
160Kbps AAC file. i can only tell the difference with the
higher frequencies though. But I wouldn't complain if I
could only get hold of material in 160Kbps MP3

i think that argument is flawed, actually. if i were to seek
a lossless format, it would not necessarily follow that i
would never purchase the cd. there are many weird people
like myself who like to have multiple copies of an album, in
multiple formats just for the sheer hobby-istic fun of
collecting music, even if it's the same song. why is it so
impossible to fathom someone having a lossless album and the
actual purchased album? heck, ive done that with autechre on
a few cds, and ended up purchasing them. so there.

It's really not that hard at all, given the right source
material and the right listening gear (not headphones with
fans whirring in your ears).

just a week or so ago i burnt two copies of madvillainy, one
from 192kbs MP3s, the other from flac files. both sets of
files were ripped from an original copy of the cd.

the flac copy was obviously more crisp, and i'm no huge
audiophile. i think just about anyone could've noticed a
difference.

i'm sorry, i didn't mean to generalize.

in my opinion though, if i got hold of a lossless version of
some music, unless i really wanted the cover artwork and so
forth, there wouldn't be much point in buying the cd.

please forgive me if i have offended with my statement. i
was just trying to show my point of view on this subject :)

as for lossless file sharing clients, i don't think i've
ever come across one.

I'm kind of annoyed that I can't find anyone online who has
AAC files :( I think i must be the only one! I always rip
stuff at 160Kbps AAC

Yeah right...there was this car I wanted, but I had just got
out of university and couldn't afford it, so I just walked
into the showroom and stole it (I intend to go back and give
them the money when I get off my arse and get a job, but
obviously because I have been to university I'm not taking
anything I consider below me). Sure I could have got the
bus until I could properly afford the car, I would still
have got to where I was going but it's just not as good as a
car. hehe, shortly after I took the car the showroom went
bankrupt and closed.

That's a false analogy. You can't equate physical theft with
copyright violation.

I think you can.

You are stealing someones hard work. You are taking food
off their table especially in the case of small independent
labels. You can fool yourself all you like about copyright
'violation' (theft) not being a real crime, but that is just
pure ignorance.

Well, I just downloaded a few .flac bootlegs that are all
from the late 60s and 70s, and I can't imagine that they
sound any better than mp3s, because the original obviously
isn't a perfect recording. So I'd rather just have mp3s.

it depends on if they've been remastered though, right?

if they've been remastered and eq'd, then you would be able
to hear a difference.

However, I would like you to tell me exactly how your so
