offline acrid milk hall from United Kingdom on 2004-06-01 06:35 [#01217402]
Points: 2916 Status: Lurker

Channel: BBC Radio 4
Date: Tuesday 01 June Time: 1:30pm to 2:00pm

92.4-94.6FM

"In the 1930s, Canadian musician Colin McPhee became
entranced by the traditional music of Bali, the gamelan. He
sponsored a group of young village players, who went on to
become famous all over the island. Maria Bakkalapulo talks
to the orginal child musicians, now in their 70s. She also
talks to minimalist composer Philip Glass about the profound
effect McPhee's obsession with the gamelan has had on his
own compositions."

No worries.
Just caught my attention & thought I'd share. The Glass
connection is interesting.

It was a good half hour listen. I always like to hear music
and customs of other cultures that I am not familiar with.
The style it was done in was a bit to 'tame' or quiet, I
know this is how radio 4 does things though.

It is also inspiring to hear how one person can visit a far
away place labelled as a poor or developing community and
still come to be entranced by its unique, and sometimes
surprising, charm.

Thanks again for the post.
