John Peel, Grime Night..

I mentionned it before in the Grime thread; but I
thought I'd give Peel his own Grime thread, in
case anyone's interested in listening.

Show starts 10pm BST (GMT+1) tonight (Wednesday) on BBC
Radio 1 (97-99FM). Worldwide listeners should be able to
stream the show as it happens, and the BBC always provide
realplayer reapeats of their shows online for about a week
after the original broadcast date.

Peel's site says:

"This week DJ Eastwood and friends will showcasing the music
some call Grime, and others call Sublow. Whatever you want
to call it, Grime is taking over, and you'd be a fool to
miss it. Grime records can be found on labels like Black
Ops, Souljah and Rephlex, so if you like what you hear, make
sure you get you're local record store to stock some.

DJ Eastwood will be joined by DJ Krafty and MC's G Double E,
Purple, I.E and I.Q, and the whole event is coming live from
Maida Vale studios, London."

Aphextriplet: I went to buy the Grime CD on Monday, only to
discover it was the vinyl release date (which Rephlex didnt
state clearly).. The CD's not out til June 7th. Not that I
can afford it either, but that's what moeny's for, eh? The
Grime stuff that Vibert/Paradinas played on Saturday was
good, and Rephlex DJs played even more of it at Moog the
other week.. Ah well, it's only a couple of weeks wait.

KEYFUMBLER: It's definitely not a "whole new genre" (I'm not
sure there has ever been such a thing). For me, I've always
liked 2step beats, but I've failed to connect with virtually
all garage I've heard. Grime has caught my attention by
marrying the rhythmic approach of garage with the aesthetics
of electronica/techno.

Or perhaps the name that Beaker from the Muppet Show made..

I'm really looking forward to the session on Peel's show
now.
More so than I was before. Hurry up Monday 7th June, I
haven't bought a new CD for too long.

i agree silly worm is great
if you construct insults where you put it at the end of a
sentence you can decide on the fly wether you're going to
say worm or whore depending on the look on the persons face
during the lead up to the word

and the dubplate.net link has .wma's!

it's a little bit harder/more glitchy than garage. that was
always my problem with most 2step music; all that nasty,
glossy production and shit about diamonds and cars totally
undermined the beats.

as for last night's set; i haven't heard it in full yet, nor
have i heard it at a decent volume on on decent headphones.
there were moments that caught my attention though.
i did think it was a pity that there seemed to be so much
mc-ing. sure, it works well in a club, but on radio? i guess
it did give that budget inner-city pirate radio feel to the
whole thing, which was fun.. but the last couple of times
i've heard grime tracks dropped alongside electronica (by
rephlex djs & luke vibert) it was solely the instrumental
stuff; and it worked a treat.

did anyone else listen to the whoel thing? what did you make
of it?

I couldn't agree more.
But as the choices seem to be between; sublow, dubstep,
techstep, eskibeat/eski & acid-garage, I can see the appeal
of chosing a meaningless word.

Funnily enough, I find it less irritating than IDM as a
term.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to plug in my analogue
washboard and get down to some Ambient Skiffle-Core.

It's UK garage, dunno why they call it grime or whatever...
I guess garage is a dirty word to most people.
Lots of pirate stations round here play that stuff all the
time. It's pretty cool, nice and lo-fi... lots of energy.

as acrid said, garage implies the glossy, uninspired
production of artful dodger et al.

labels are annoying but useful shorthand, rather than saying
"the underground music associated with this club, that
pirate station, this east london postcode, that distorted
kick drum.... etc.". only unimaginative producers let the
labels define and limit their music.

as aproduct oredfsp ful rtacrid sdodger et aigarage implies
the glossy, unini iond, al.

Bring it on indeed.

Vletr: Loved the mangled sentence, really reenforced your
point! Actually made me laugh aloud, causing several people
in the office to look my way. Thanks for the shout on the
single, too.

JAroen: you win the award for best cat-related avatar I have
seen on this here message board.

Diablo: I know that essentially its just a slightly rougher
version of some of the underground garage that's been around
for quite some time now, but as Vletr said; genre
terminology (annoying & meaningless though a lot of it may
be) can be quite useful when trying to communicating an idea
as complicated as music in a short space of time.. "only
unimaginative producers let these labels define and limit
their music."

stealth is turning out good for the bomb, its not going to

I had this gut feeling that Stealth would be good for the
Bomb as well as for Nottingham.
With respect, the Bomb's been able to rest on it's laurels.
As far as "proper" clubbing in this city was concerned, the
Bomb was it. It's easy for the top dog to get complacent. A
little healthy competition from Stealth keeps both of you
sharp; as well as giving the public a choice.
Besides, the two venues have such different atmospheres. The
Bomb has the whole underground claustrophobic
igloo-come-Luke's-uncle's-house-on-Tatooine-in-Star-Wars
feel to it. Stealth has the whole, high-ceiling,
blacker-than-black angular look to it. They're almost like
polar opposites.

Can't believe you guys but Derrick May on the same night as
Carl Craig though.. That's a pretty daring way to divide
your audiences. I know some people who thought that battle
lines were being drawn at that point!

How's Derren by the way. I spotted him in Selectadisc the
other day; but it's been so long since I've seen him that he
had to do a double take before he (vaguely) recognised me. I
guess I did look pretty different from how I usually do, in
my office garb.

Nottingham's full of shit student-oriented clubs (cheesy
music, cheap alcopops & sticky carpets) & boring clone-bars
(all aluminium & pine).

The Bomb & Stealth are both clubs in
Nottingham. They host a variety of nights (electronica,
techno, drum&bass, deep house, hiphop, breaks etc). Check
the links to their websites for more info than I have time
to type here & now.
Both are very good. The Bomb's been around for years.
Stealth was started by one of the guys formerly involved
with the Bomb and, before that, the Social. It's only been
open about a month, but so far it's had a pretty impressive
& diverse lineup; the highlight (for me) being Luke Vibert,
Mike Paradinas & Ivan Smagghe last weekend.

Can't believe you've never heard of either of them. But at
least you know now. Enjoy.
