I used to be a massive fan of Dance and Old Skool. This was the only kind of music I ever listened to. I found my releief in various chillout albums which started arrising in the late 90s which offered a totally different sound. After this I then moved onto Electronic/IDM and I feel that I am going to stick with this for life.
When I look back now and listen to all my dance albums I notice one very major asset to club/regular dance music. THEY ALL SOUND THE SAME. Seriously I'm not joking, I swear that this is one big conspiracy and there's one dance DJ who writes all the dance music. Here are some of the things I have noticed after reviewing numerous tracks.
co Beats are the same (tempo and actual sound)! co Instruments/Sounds are the same! co Synths are the same! co Tempo is often similar or the same!
The only element that is different are the vocals which don't even appear in all dance music. Maybe it's only me who thinks this but it's one thing that actually puts me off dance and attracts me to Chillout and IDM.

Dance music is wierd...every so often someone will come along with a totally fresh sound on top of the standard four to the floor beat, within two weeks 867 new tracks by different people arrive all sounding the same but with different fit birds all miming to the same fat slappers voice.

Let's get the ball rolling.
In 10 years will IDM suffer the same fait that dance has undergone? Or does IDM just carry too many possibilities for this happening?
And finally, will Dance eventually die out giving way to IDM as how it should be?

dance music is an inherently extra-limited form of music. however, all genres have their innovators. i think idm is such a broad genre, it has much more room for development at this point. look at the differences between current autechre and current squarepusher and aphex twin, just as the most obvious examples. they're all extremely different approaches that basically fall under this main genre.
then again, eventually most forms of music just become commercialized and boring until someone invents a totally new approach to music that catches on.
plus, i hate dance music. :o

I can recommend OLD SKOOL CLUB CLASSICS MOSCD62 (That's Ministry of Sound)
Also would recommend
THE CHILLOUT SESSION 2003 MOSCD56 THE CHILLOUT SESSION SUMMER COLLECTION 2003 MOSCD65
Onlt go for Ministry or Deca Dance. Deca do some good deals on huge compilations. I would not recommend buying just an artists album. I only have a couple, Roger Sanchez and Royksopp

you could try the danny howells 24/7 from the global underground series. Disc1 and 2 both come highly recommended.

if you're a fan of the dnb... in this case, more poppy, melodic 2step dnb... you should try and find tracks by Marcus Intalex and St. Files... i've been listening to a few of my favourites this evening and i still love them after all these years...
in particular: 4 Hero - Better Place (Marcus Intalex & ST Files Remix) Marcus Intalex and ST Files- Revolution -My Soul -Universe
oh and a couple other tracks that i used to really love: J Majik- the lizard Nasty Habits (aka Doc Scott)- Liquid Fingers (goldie mix)
... just a few off the top of my head... i'd really like to go to a dnb club... i don't think i've ever been... there's not too much of that here anymore... i don't mind some house and techno (can't stand trance), but i'll always be a dnb head...

d'n'b is all we have in clubs over here...appart from that is techno and house, but those are usually at much bigger places.
