Boards of Canada 'Magic Window'

I've been thinking a lot about this track lately.

Is it 'just blank space'? Or is it recorded with signals
outsight the frequence which the human ear can hear?

If the 2nd (which I believe), did anyone of you manage to
decode it?

Or is it space BOC gave us to let our imagination fill it up
with whatsoever?

I listened to it many times yesterday, sometimes I also
imagined to hear something but trying to gwet into it more
carefully the (imaginative?) sounds dissapeared.

On the vinyl I believe it is just a smooth surface with no
grooves, with just a sillhouetted outline of some people.

Yeah, but on the Japanese CD tracks 1 -23 have a total
running time of 66:02.

There are plenty of explanations / comments about this track
at davidac.'s BOC page.

But I still believe there IS something hidden inside the
track to be decoded

yeah!

I had Geogaddi (Japan CD) on heavy rotation yesterday. Each
time after the silent track the 'From one source...' bonus
song started, it was almost like a relief. Because in the
silence I grew some much tension trying to hear something.

So- if the silent track is a rendition to the devil and the
follow up is a rendition to god....

In the end, god shows up- the happy end

A cd is 16bit/44.1kHz.

With 44.1kHz it is only posible to make a sound go up to
(44.1)/2kHz = 22.05kHz, wich is at the top of our hearing
range, at least for younger people, and there is nothing
there, i promise you.
Anyone who owns the cd can rip it and see for them self,
that there is nothing there. Its just space to make it
66:06.

end by some noise straight away....so then came the magic
window.

i saw a post by sum guy (can't remember where now) who did
something called a hexdump (?) on the track, he basicaly
said it was completely empty, nothing there at all. i also
saw sumone say that the frequencies that magic windows use
(google magic window if you don't know what it means) are
outside those able to be recorded on a cd anyway. and yes
the vinyl version of this track is just an etching, so
definately nothing on the vinyl version.

I remember studying a theory called "Magic Window" which
states that children percieve everything they see on
television as being real and an accurate reflection of what
happens outside, i.e. it acts as a magic window on the
world.

offline kid from mum (United Kingdom) on 2004-04-29 10:26 [#01166771]

Magic Window - Frequencies which (according to Thomas E.
Bearden) are especially suited for coupling to and bringing
energies from other dimensions. [EX via MM] Another source
seems to imply such frequencies could be used to communicate
from one dimension to another. (As you can see - this is
kind of venturing into the realm of new-agey pseudo-science,
but I wouldn't rule it out for that reason alone - much of
what we take for granted today in science was seen as
pseudo-scientific at one point.)

from http://www.lunarsight.com/glossary.htm, a link from the
davidac site.

offline arnold113 from Germany on 2004-04-29 10:33 [#01166782]

The range of frequencies that most of these magic windows
fall under are well above human hearing - more than likely,
they are intended to be 'accessed' using electromagnetic
means (a device that creates an EM field). Although, if
you're up for a challenge, you could try lowering the octave
of these frequencies (i.e. dividing the number by two) until
you reach a point where you're in the range of audible
sound, and then try plugging that frequency into a sound
generator.

(the text above was from another article about the theories
of Thomas E. Bearden).

That was my first idea of BOC's Magic Window.

I tried to imagine an instrument/tool to lower the
frequencies in this song so it is possible to hear them.

;-) Of course, if there WHERE any (which there aren't, or
are they?!)

there's the same image that's on the vinyl.

magic window freq's

the mysterious magic window...yeah it's true what kid told
you,so i wont repeat the same.
well i managed to get a sound from this track...just put it
into some sample editor and normalise the track around
-1dB.
if you're wondering...i heard white noize with some other
signal interference,weird.
but i think that this track could be decoded in some
professional studio or lab.

By the way, I don't know how they got the figure of '7.83hz'
for the resonant frequency of the earth. Considering
seismic waves travel about 10km/ second and the earth's
diameter is about 12,730km on average, that would be about 1
cycle per every 1270 seconds.

On the vinyl version of Geogaddi, the record that has Magic
Window (side 6) has the same ingraving the Pioneer 10
spacecraft had, and on the label, the frequency 162.225MHz,
a reference to the Magic Window frequencies mentioned
above.

Very interesting IMO - I wonder what the next album will
have in store?

Whether something's hidden or not, for all intents and
purposes, it's just a blank track. Maybe they just put it
there so us dorks would discuss the possibilities, who
knows? Blank tracks are common. I can list several off the
top of my head: "Subsequently" by Love Spirals Downwards,
"(Brief Pause)" by Clinic, "You Can Make Your Own Music" by
Covenant, " 4'33" " by John Cage, of course "magic window",
etc. I generally find theses blank tracks annoying because
it means I have to reach for the >> button or wait it out.
Either option disrupts the flow. For the song in question, I
would've preferred "Corsair" go straight into "From One
Source All Things Depend", there's plenty of fade at the end
of "Corsair" so it would've been a smooth transition.
