Just bought Merzbow's 'Last of Analog Sessions'

just picked this 3cd box up in the store, haven't
really given it a good listen, but i sure am happy with it
since i like his analogue stuff, and the artwork (and patch
:D) look good. i think his analogue stuff is more innovative
and less random than stuff from his digital period,

Last of The Analog Sessions is a three CD box set
compiling Merzbow's final three albums recorded entirely on
analog equipment. These albums sat unreleased until now and
mark a historic compositional change in the world of
Merzbow. Upon completion of these three albums Masami Akita
traded his analog equipment for an Apple laptop which he has
been composing on ever since. This change in equipment marks
a change in sound and a whole new period for Merzbow. This
box set documents the end of one era and the beginning of
another. The first 1000 copies include an embroidered
Merzbow Analog Sessions patch. Each CD is packed in an LP
mini jacket featuring cover art by Masami Akita. The entire
package is housed in a deluxe silver foil-printed box
featuring the EMS Synthi, one of Akita's primary instruments
during Merzbow's analog era.

the release date on that site is wrong btw, i think it
should be 2003

anyone else familiar with this box, or perhaps any opinions
on merzbow in general, or about his analogue to digital
step?

please don't let this thread turn into another
'anti-merzbow' / 'noise sucks' thread, thx

remember those anti-sickness rubber strips which all cars in
the 80s used to have trailing out the back of their car
supposedly lessening the friction?

no, snares has well constructed beats (which some people
call noisy/noise) and melodies now and then, but this is
pure noise, no beats or melody,
you could compare it to afx's ktpa's but i found those
irritating tracks, whereas i can listen to merzbow
(preferrably on headphones) for a long time and really enjoy
it, it's so powerfull
kinda has the same calming effect as ambient on me

thanks for reminding :)

that release now that i think of it, it's very powerful and
dark indeed, another reason to check out the rest!

Where is the best place to buy Merzbow cd's in the uk
online? I really liked his set last week in birmingham, have
no idea what tracks they were though.

Tauromachine is awesome. "Frog" is very cool too. I think it
was re-released on cd a few months ago including a cd with
remixes

no problem at all man

someone should correct me if i'm wrong here since i know
very little about music making equipment, but akita used to
make his noise/music with equipment like synths, mics, drum
machines, filters, modulators, oscillators, tapes etc. that
is what is referred to as his analog(ue) stuff,
i think it was around 1999 he started using an (apple)
laptop to make all his noise/music with, and he still does
now. this is what's called his '(post-analog) digital era'

as i mentioned before i prefer his analog stuff since it's
more varied and less random imo, yet it's hard and powerful
as hell.

btw i'm really loving the 1st cd (catapillar) of this box,
i'd really recommend it to all of you who like merzbow,
i haven't given them all 3 that much time, but cd 1 sounds
best to me at this moment (also track 1 from that, awesome
starter)

thanks...

well, every Merzbow album i have has its own "sound" -
Tauromachine sounds very different than Venerology for
example, more "electronic" in a way, with sine waves and
stuff... (i personally prefer Venerology, Ananga-Ranga is a
great track)

"Tamago" (one of his latest albums) is a very surprising
Merzbow album if you can find it too - you can actually find
some kind of, highly "damaged"/distorted, melodies and
rhythms... it is pretty varied as well!

and "Music For Bondage Performance, vol.1" (one of his first
i think) is also very surprising in another way - it is not
*that* noisy compared to other Merzbow albums, much less
"maximalist" (you can listen to it without having your ears
ringing at the end ^^)... it can be compared to Coil's "How
To Destroy Angels"...

I think he still uses analogue gear(guitar, chickens, sheep
:) ), it's just that now his main tool is a computer.

nice artwork

I haven't heard any merzbow yet, ever. I only listened to
parts of that satanstornade-cd on warpmarket some time ago.
How does that relate to "regular" merzbow-music?

In other words: if I didn't like satanstornade, could I
still like other merzbow?

"if I didn't like satanstornade, could I still like other
merzbow?"

You could but if you're not into harsh noises you'd need to
be a bit careful which releases you listen to.
"sleeper awakes at the edge of the abyss" by merzbow and
christoph heemann is a very ambient sounding record for
example, I once fell asleep playing it through my
headphones. I've heard "Vibratance" is a not so harsh one as
well(can't verify this yet though)

"

Thanks. I'll memorize that titel.
Ambient is nice... so maybe that would indeed be a good
starting point :-)
