i'm thinking about...

taking another loan out to get a 17" Powerbook

i've been dying to get one of these for ages, and I've been
working things out money-wise.....I think I might be able to
get a financial loan with Apple to get one.

The trouble is, I've already still got a 4 year loan on the
go from my iBook, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to take
out another loan. I've got a 100% credit rating because I've
never ever missed payments on my contracted mobile phone, my
loan, or my contracted broadband, so technically they should
let me have one right?

Anyways...I really do want one of the newer 17" ones.....and
you can have a 128MB graphics card added as extra too (which
is what i'll do if i get one)!

what's wrong with the ibook?

nothing terribly bad with it

specs:

900MHz G3
640MB RAM (upgraded to the max)
40GB HDD
24x CD Burner and DVD reader drive

i have speed issues rewiring Reason and Cubase and having
some VSTi's open, and I can't run AvP2 or Tron 2.0 on this
machine........and if i get a new powerbook i'll be able to
play DOOM3 (which i absolutley MUST do!)

i'm a huge DOOM fan you see

if playing doom3 is worth the loan: buy it, but if i were

pogo

don't like how PC's crash so often
i could build one myself, but i don't have enough room in my
bedroom :(

-crazone

well, yeh it is :)

my iBook will be given to my girlfriend if I get the
Powerbook - she needs a decent machine for her Music Tech
course

i can't save up.........by the time i had the money for it,
it'd be like 3 years away

i'm sorry, but i'm not waiting 3 years to play DOOM3, or do
some serious stuff with Cubase and Reason and stuff.

I was in your shoes this time last year, osc. I ended up
picking up an alienware area51-m laptop. Its a beast, to be
sure. Stick with the mac though, because I wanted to get a
refund on this laptop for a powerbook. But i just found out
their warranty doesnt offer a refund after 90 days. boohoo

How long have you got left on your ibook payments? and how
long till they stick a g5 in a powerbook?

brokephones

i've heard those laptops are THE BOMB, especially for
games.......they're the guys that do all the bright coloured
laptops right? anyways, out of PC laptops id have, AlienWare
is one of them! along with Sony, and Toshiba

warphex

my iBook payments are until 2007 :( and the powerbook one
will probably be 4 years too

it'll be a VERY long time before we see G5 laptops - Apple
are having problems keeping the CPU cool enough to be used
in a portable, and anyways, have you seen the size of the
G5?? It's humongous.......well for a CPU anyway's.....but I
wouldn't want a G5......not yet anyway, because you can't
run Virtual PC on them because they're 64bit and VPC is
32bit

Well when I got it in sept. the best video card in the unit
was 64meg, which is already getting outdated

BE CAREFUL!

To loan money is to strap more weight and more chains to
yourself.

Get a better job, you've proven your a hard worker now try
for a job with more pay, cut down on the buying things.

Good words, DoctorMO. I'd save up oscillik.

brokephones

yeah, but still a 64MB card is good........this iBook only
has 32, and i wish i had a better card..........that's why
if i go for this powerbook, i'm going for the 128 add-on

DoctorMO

i can't get another Job, i'm not employable remember?

and i can't save

most probably

i don't know

i am hoping to get a place in Burton on Trent, but it's hard
because to live there you need a job there, and to get a job
there you need to live there

it's a pain in the arse

but yeah, i'll most probably still be living at home

You are employable, personally I'd take some evening courses
to help build confidence.

one of the things that holds you back osc is what you think
of yourself.

God I can't wait to get rid of my loan, I shortened it's
time to a year instead of 3, £390 a month, very heavy
repayments probably more than I should be able to afford but
I want it gone so I'm not chained to nothing incase I want
to move anywhere (you know like boston maybe)

i'm not employable because everyone wants either experience,
or qualifications........i have neither

you're planning on emigrating??? that's the bomb!!!!

i hope all works out for you mate :)

who said anything about planning or emigrating, still half
american half british and not planning anything, but you
know just incase.

I think you put yourself down too much man, think about it
you go to get a job so you get money, they get you and your
abilities, so your not a graduate of law you can still get
into many many areas of not only IT but engineering and the
service sector.

i'd double check on stuff like that man, but either way,
it's the bomb if you can get over there

DocMO, i don't put myself down without good reason - I went
through about 16 interviews before I got this job I'm in
now, and every one of them didn't want me. I'm not an
employable guy. I dunno if it's the way I look, the way I
talk, or my capabilities....but it can't be my capabilities
because I know shitloads about computers, Music Tech and the
like.....it's not like i'm not capable of doing stuff.

offline DoctorMO from London (United Kingdom) on 2004-04-24 09:12 [#01158944]
Points: 99 Status: Regular

Prove yourself to them, you need to go into interviews with
the attitude that this job is yours and you want it and you
can do it better than anyone else.

employers are more willing these days to consider more than
qualifications so I'm thinking it's just attitude. and you
do look better now than you did before I know it's horrible
to consider but conforming to get in the door is sometimes
easier than fighting it.

update

i've been accepted for the loan, and here is what i'm
getting:

17" PowerBook
1.5GHz G4
1 GB DDR RAM (2 modules)
80GB 54000rpm Hard Drive
128MB ATI Radeon 9700 Mobility Graphics Card
SuperDrive (burns DVDs at 4x)

AirPort Extreme Base Station (without Modem)

AppleCare 3 year extended warranty

Professional Backpack case by Brenthaven

The only problem is that the estimated shipping date is "on
or before 31/05/2004" and I visit my girlfriend for the week
beginning the 24/05/2004

knowing my luck it wont get here before I go :(

Well, at least I was approved for the loan anyways!

not a bad idea. i just hope for your sake you make good on
your payments, because having bad credit has ruined some
people's financial states.

well i should be able to make the payments

So far i've had a contracted mobile phone for nearly two
years now, never missed a payment

i've had a loan for my iBook which is coming up to a year,
and i've never missed a payment

and i've had broadband for a few months, never missed a
payment

not bad for someone who's 21 in October, eh?

;)

oh and btw, my mobile phone bills averaged at about £80 a
month, topping out at £140

ok, this is kinda weird

can anyone shed some light on this?

the other day, the shipping method for my items was
something like "express" or something in the same context.

now it says "Merge In Transit" (see attached pic)
what does that mean?

the computer is being built somewhere, then the computer
gets sent to another place to be put with the rest of my
items and then its forwarded onto me?
