surprisingly good ambient/soundscape album given that when
i first heard about it it sounded like a total gimmick.
apparently the loops here were being transferred from analog
to digital formats and literally deteriorated as that
process was happening. the result reminds me of eno's best
stuff.

I read about this at Michael Heumann's site - Haunted Ink
- he also review some other Basinski works there. Been
meaning to get some Basinski.

i've got the first volume, with the second and fourth on the
way. the third was sold out at forced exposure.

it's very minimal, and requires a commitment by the
listener. the first disintegration loop is more than an
hour long, and it slowly and subtly changes as quiet pulses
and sighs and rests paint a soft pastel melody that decays
into quiet over that time. it makes an excellent lullaby
for falling asleep, but it also makes for a soothing (if
subtly melancholy) atmosphere during the day. not for
everyone, but if its description sounds appealing to you,
you will probably find much pleasure in listening.

the second loop is only just over ten minutes long, and is a
similar loop that restfully dies into quiet.

i mentioned this in an ambient thread last week, but i don't
think anyone else in the thread had heard it.

that site you link is pretty cool. i like his music review
system.

for those here who like stuff along the lines of stone in
focus, this album might be up your alley. it just takes a
certain amount of patience.

Tribes Of Neurot (with members from the band Neurosis) did
some similar music projects. really interesting and cool
stuff. there's great information on their project in detail
here:

Tape Decay
Resonant Sun

i have the Resonant Sun on Neurosis' DVD release of A Sun
That Never Sets. the visuals for that album is basically
just an oscillator. it's really cool, though.
