I was using a 120 gig Maxtor to make backups and it fucked
up on me - couldn't do jack with it, so I took it apart and
fiddled with it.

First thing I noticed was the enormously powerful magnets at
the rear of the "tone-arm" - I got one of them off the
chassis in one piece.

Second thing I noticed was how well the platters take
fingerprints, and how easily they scratch.

I don't know what to do with the platters! What if someone
can extract the data even though I tried to fuck them up??
They'll have a bunch of my financial data, and my bad bad
poetry, and my fisting videos, and my fingerprints!
AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!

taking it apart and touching it was NOT the thing to do.
those things are really fucking sensitive, the arms operate
over the platter within a tiny fraction of the length of a
human hair. delicate I think.

It's from a 'macintosh' commercial. She seems pretty
'blaked' in it too.

Yeah, I wouldn't have opened it if I thought it could be
salvaged - but when a drive freezes up three times in three
partitioning / formatting attempts, you don't want to trust
it for backups!

Have you ever opened one up? It's oddly satisfying.

yeah, those magnets are strong. I think it was a hard-drive
stolen from my highschool. taking stuff apart is fun, I
almost did it to my hard drive, but it came back to life
after 3 days.

Ha yeah I gave it a few days to settle down, but no dice,
anyhoo I still have a Western Digital 120 for backup plus a
WD 160 in my rig. I'm going to stick with WD from now on -
those Maxtor drives have been flaky in the past too.

Put the magnet on the fridge - can't get it off now. XD

My harddrive died circa summer of '01. It was full of my
songs.

I had idea that i save some money and get it rescued. But
father told me while ago that he fucking tried to fix it and

he didn't succeed and threw it away :{

Just in case, where can you get this kind of thing done?
How much does it cost?

I remember checking out prices back then. Some places were
only about $500. But most were about $1000. You can google
the answer.

Hey yeah, I'm gonna take apart all my hard drives and make a
wind chime!

What's the thing inside a Maxtor drive that looks like a
chunk of charcoal in a plastic case? Is it poison? Is it a
bad idea to eat things you find in hard drives?
