Polygon Window.. AFX's engineer

Hi chaps,
I had an enjoyable time last night in the pub telling some
zitty faced kiddo how he didn't know what the hell he was
talking about.
Basically he said "Aphex Twin just regurgitates what has
been done over the last ten years.."

I can't be bothered to refute that here, I'm sure you can
all see how this guy knows nothing.

However, he did say one interesting thing: he claimed
Surfing On Sine Waves was actually by "Apex's recording
engineer".

Now, although I think this is garbage, I wonder where he got
this idea to squeeze into his one tiny brain cell.

Anyone know the origin of this (or was he making it up)?

Cheers!

I hope so. I don't mind that at all.. except he was a mate
of somebody I know who said he's a bit of a nob end, so I
doubt it.

I can see why it looks like a piss take from my post, but
you had to be there.

well, from what i've read, RDJ has been making hardware
synths since he was 13

does that sound like the kind of person who needs an
engineer to work on his stuff?

:)

there is no evidence that rdj has made his own hardware, not
even by grant

rephlex hype

i could do that, but does it work

? maybe/maybe not ?

i kind of agree with him about the regurgitation part.. well
not completely.. rich's done quite a bit to change the face
of "electronic music" but his styles are so spread all over
the place that a little "regurgitation" of other
music is impossible to avoid. one of the great things about
rich is he can write in so many different styles/timbres and
mix a few together to get something unique.. and it always
has his touch that you can usually instantly recognise. for
someone to vilify him as a total regurgitator would
be wrong.. he's much more original and innovative than most
other musicians of his popularity.. and every musician
borrows sounds/style/ideas from other musicians.. unless
they somehow lived their life under a rock composing their
own "music" having never actually heard anyone else's music
before.

even still, if a musician were to be confined to never
having heard any other music, there would be some
similarites obviously

even if only tiny

:)

Well, I think some aspect of regurgitation is implied in
most art, however this guy was just being innane.

I was originally talking to somebody else who asked me about
Mixing It on Radio 3 so I said something like "They play
everything from Partch to ethnic to Aphex etc.."
At which point this guy butts in saying "Aphex is shit!"
I simply asked why he thinks that and he starts ranting all
this crap.

Btw oscillik, I'm not considering whether some engineer did
the album, I am wondering where such a story would have come
from (unless he made it up) since it would be hard to take
seriously enough to take hold and yet at the same time..
myth and AFX go hand in hand.

i know mate :)

that's my point though

i don't think RDj would ever use an engineer, regardless of
whether it's to get him to assist with mixing or whatever,
because he can do it all himself.

that's why, imo, i think it's not very plausable that
Surfing On Sine Waves could have been done by "AFX's
engineer" because i don't think he'd ever use an engineer in
the first place

:)

don't be a square, everybody will work with a sound
enginneer when the right time as come... (like mastering an
album)

Tis bullshite.

The only weird thing mentioned about the surfing on sine
waves album was in an early future music interview where
richard said the drum sounds had been updated as the orignal
recordings sounded shit... but I think that was just more
bullshit covering up the fact he didn't have a 909.

the kid right?

Didn't Tom Middleton (one half of Jedi Knights) used to be
the "other member" of Aphex Twin? Maybe he's gettng confused
about that?

Was there ever a second member in "aphex twin"?
First time I hear about that...
(I tought "twin" refered to his brother, who died at
birth... )

Yes... in the early days.

From the Aphex Twin Faq:

"Is Richard James really the only man in aphex
twin?

Yes, he performs completely as a one man operation on most
of his
albums, usually out of his home studio. But there
have been instances where he has worked with other
musicians, such as Mike Paradinas, of mu-Ziq. But this
(excluding the collaboration with Tom Middleton on
AB1
)work is released under different names.
"

The kid loopychoon met was probably regurgitating this and
confused AB1 with Polygon Window (same period).
