Ableton Live Question

I just "aquired" this program. A few questions.

1) Is it easy to learn?

2) Is it good for live stuff?

3) If I want to play one of my tracks, would I have to cut
each track into individual wav files for each
instrument/sound?

4) Can you add wav files in realtime without affecting the
performance?

5) Does it have MIDI support so I can control my MC303 in a
live situation?

Thankyou

1) dunno, haven't messed too much with it, but seems easy
enough

2) yes! at least it looks like it'd be the bomb

3) yes you have to cut up your tracks into loops

4) yes you can add aif or wav in realtime

5) it has MIDI note trigger - you can trigger your loops
from your MIDI keyboard, and your computer's keyboard - you
can't use it to trigger your synth though - it handles audio
samples only, live cannot act as a MIDI controller (like
say, cubase would)

1) Yes

2) It's what it's designed for and it is excellent.

3) Only if you wanted to manipulate the individual
instruments, otherwise you can just stick the whole track in
there to play.

4) Yes, again it's what it is designed for.

5) Basically what oscillik said :D

"3) Only if you wanted to manipulate the individual
instruments, otherwise you can just stick the whole track in

there to play."

yeh but what would be the point of using Live for that? you
could just stick your track in winamp or something and let
it run

or what would be the point of using Live in the first
place?? :)

the whole point of Ableton Live is so you can pretty much
remix your track in realtime

:P

i'm not having a go, i just thought that was quite funny :)

i "acquired" this too, for my mac

it's been sitting on my hard drive for about a month, doing
nothing! lol

i love the interface and everything, but until i've got some
stuff that i wanna put in here, i can't really use it

the trouble with this software is that to use it effectively
and proficiently you really need loop based stuff.

i really wanna start using this as a creative tool, some of
the envelope features look fucking amazing!

well maybe what he meant was that you can stick some tracks
in as they are and others can be cut up so you can pick and
choose which ones you want to manipulate. Can you do that?
Can you stick in say, a half hour set in Ableton without
crashing it, and can you set different tempos? Or do you
need to save each tune as an individual file?

Of course there would...Gav performs live with a guitar as
well...if he was doing a live show and he has produced a
backing track for a particular song etc, when he wouldn't
want to have to cue everything individually he could just
drop the entire track into the mix.

I've found it pretty solid, just make sure and VST's etc are
tested well in advance because there are a few that cause it
to throw a wobbly and crash. You can also use it with
Cubase through ReWire.

>mc_303_beats

when you're in live, you work on a session (your live
document, like cubase uses "project files"

for your session, you choose your tempo. as far as i know,
you can't automate a tempo change, at least i don't think
you can.

>ecnadniarb

yeah but still you could use any bog standard audio player
for that
you just stick some slience between the waveforms

;)

the cheap-ass way of performing live!
heh

yeh, apparently it'll rewire with reason too

i could see that as being VERY useful!

;)

oooh thats just triggered an idea

you could rewire live into cubase, then you could maybe get
your MIDI keyb to trigger any external synths via
cubase!!!!!!

there you go mc_303_beats

;)

that should work

You can automate the tempo through ReWire.

I mean like Tom Jenkinson performs some track by using
samples and fucking about with individual parts and other
tracks he plays the bass guitar and just leaves the backing
track going...it makes sense to do it all in the one
environment as you are performing live. I was just giving a
proper answer to the question.

The people who I consider legends will know who they
are...but I suppose you are all legends in some ways (ie.
best consigned to history)

What the fuck? haha that post in the wrong FREAKING
topic...oh well fuck it I can't be arsed posting it again so

some people legends.

yeh i know what you meant mate :)

but if you just import your backing track, the whole thing
as a stereo waveform, you can't manipulate it very
much........all you can do is add effects to the whole
track

if you were gonna just play your backing track, without
needing to modify individual loops and parts, and realtime
arrangment, you could just use winamp or something

that's what i meant :)

sorry if i'm coming across as an arse, i don't mean to be

i'm just trying to help

I Imagine you need super computer to have cubase and live
and softsynths all going at the same time.

lol, yeh probably

mine starts to crawl when rewiring cubase+reason

i'd like to see a machine do reason+cubase+live+VSTi's+VST
plugins

1) Is it easy to learn?

Yes, an absolute doddle if you've used ejay or acid.

2) Is it good for live stuff?

Yes, it's fantastic. It also makes a good sampler for when
DJing (use a click track which you then mute to get it in
time, then fade up the channel live is on when you want to
play your samples)

3) If I want to play one of my tracks, would I have to cut
each track into individual wav files for each
instrument/sound?

Not really. You could just use it to DJ whole tracks with.
Having it a seperate waves would allow for more
flexibility/actually playing, as well as for smoother
transitions between tracks.

4) Can you add wav files in realtime without affecting the
performance?

Yes. Drag and drop wavs from your sample file. Generally,
you should make sure they're cut as loops before you import
them. Fiddly to do in live whilst playing (although not
impossible).

5) Does it have MIDI support so I can control my MC303 in a

live situation?

Not played with that much (aside from using midi to control
live).
