installing windows 95

Oops, this thread title isn't very fitting as installing it
is exactly what I am NOT doing.

I have a "shwindows 95" see dee!!!!!!!!!

plus

I also have a boot disk-a-ma-jig44444!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have these things.

I bought them on ebay.

Now, I put the boot disk-a-ma-jig44444 into the
boot-disk-a-ma-jig slot, and then turn on the "computer". It
miraculously displays "a:"

like it worked or something.

Now this stupid book that came with windows 95 (that is 95%
complex legal stuff to make sure you payed money for it and
5% helpful information) says to type
"a:\setup"
or
"a:\win95\setup" if you're using the cd rom or some crap
like that.

but typing that did jack. Thanks for listening to my
interesting story.

You need to get a bootdisk which has the windows 95 setup
file on it, which you can get from www.bootdisk.com

Wait, why are you downgrading to windows 95?

I remember Windows 95. I sure do.

Well I bought this "boot disk" off of ebay. It is called the
"windows 95/98" boot disk or something. I used it (I had to
press "del" when the computer started to change "bios" to
start with the "a drive") so the boot disk seemed to work,
it wrote some funny stuff and did stuff, then it displayed a
prompt. Now what? I had the win 95 cd in the cd rom at this
point.

Well.. the previous operating system on that computer was
serioiusly infected with the computer equivalent of, hmm,
bad diseases. yes. plus as far as I know all those big
complex operating systems don't even have DOS to play dos
games. or something.

Hahaha! You can get the bootdisk for free. Download
this and run it. You'll need a new floppy and
stuff but once you boot off that you can type setup and it
will ask you for the 95 cd. How much did you pay for it off
ebay?

well i could help u but only i have gotten windows XL
(spanish version of windows 98 i think )

also maybe could you google searh or something :) i always
go there for help.

off topic: i am listen to 7\fx (richard d. hames) -smajpahce
ep late at nite, it makes me happy :) do you?

after I put in the boot disk and started the computer it had
3 choiced:
1) start with cd rom support
2) start w/o cd rom support
3) view help file

I tried 3 which was a bunch of complex unhelpful jargon,
then tried 1 which made it go to a:

earlier I typed "format c" which is why I need the boot
disk. So now I guess I have no operating system and want to
install windows 95 from scratch.

is the windows 95 cd not bootable?

i mean, if you set your bios to load first from your cdrom
drive, then put the cd in and reboot, will it not begin the
install from the cd?

It was only 20$. Just kidding it was fifty cents, but the
shipping was 5 bucks, understandably given it was really
small, light weight and wrapped in a folded manilla envelope
with tape. Can I put that thing on a used A disk?

off topic: I havn't listened to drukqs much, if that's what
smapahce is on. But come 2 daddy's to cure a weakling child
mix is a really really really good track.

Right...you want to start the computer with CD-ROM support.

When you get to the dos prompt and assuming you only have
one hard drive on you computer type E:\setup.exe and press
return.

The reason for this is C: will most probably still be your
harddrive, D: will be a temporary RAMdisk drive. So E:
should be your CD-ROM drive.

If it can't find anything on E: try typing the same again
using D: instead.

I trust you aren't pissing about here?

I am not pissing about (although I usually am). I shall try
this. Does it matter which drive is currently prompted on
the screen when you type this? If this doesn't work, I'll
try that other boot disk and if that doesn't work, I'll have
fun destroying it in the most painful way I can imagine, and
just buy another stupid computer with windows already
installed.

Nope it doesn't matter what drive is currently prompted as
the drive letter being typed before setup.exe tells it where
it should be run from

More than likely because it may be a copy which wasn't made
as a bootabe copy. Alternatively it is possible that the
BIOS in the machine (assuming it ran on 95 originally) may
not support booting directly from CD-ROM which was the
purpose of the boot disk in the first place :)

Are higher versions of windows even better for someone who
just wants to play games mostly. The higher versions don't
even seem to have dos support for games as far as I know.
Freakin doom2 won't even work on them without a bunch of
complex programs like legacy that emulate dos, or however
the hell they work.

that's true..

you'd need a DOS emulator..

98SE is the best for older games and stuff...it is the final
DOS based windows before they started really fucking up
legacy support

Not for 98SE you wouldn't...it was the last Windows
operating system build on top of DOS which gave you proper
access to DOS (ME was a shite botch job). WindowsNT/2000
and XP can all run an emulated DOS type system shell but it
aint the real deal foo'.

The "higher versions" would include 98 and 98SE and ME at a
push...all are better than 95 (maybe ME is about as shit)

XP took quite a while for me to tweak it to the point where
i was happy with it, but now i'm very happy with it.

as per Microsoft usual, Microsoft first turns everything ON
and then expects you to delve deep into
sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-menu's to ever get it switched the fuck
off.

That e: stuff was correct. I got a bit further before
running into yet another problem. Now scandisk scans, then I
have to click yes to agree to a big license agreement, but
then after that the mouse stops responding, the screen beeps
once and everything haults. The same thing happened 5 times,
but only on the 5th time it gave some sort of "overflow"
message. Well I've learned a lesson: just buy a new computer
instead of ever attempting to install windows yourself.

I bought the disk version of Win 95 when it came out, as I
didn't have a CD drive (or a sound card actually) at the
time. 765986 disks...

Daamn..

Ok here's the update to my interesting story:

I have given up on that computer because I am too inept to
install windows on it. So... I bought a used 280 dollar
computer on ebay, and was stupid enough to buy one WITHOUT
AN OPERATING SYSTEM! Ah ha ha ha ha... ahem. I am going to
buy windows 98 SE like braindance suggested now for freaking
60 bucks or more, because windows 95 didn't install on that
sumbitch computer either. This better work or I might become
a serial killer or something. I mean that.

I've seen one of those at work before (also, some early

used it!

Talking of "zany" windows versions, I hear they're doing a
Welsh version of XP!
