i saw this movie last night and it fucking blew me away.
the whole premise, the way its carried out, the perfect
actors for every part...... michael gondry and charlie
kaufman are geniouses. literally every single frame of this
movie could be framed and used as a stand alone piece of
artwork. i just hugely loved how the movie really delved
into the little intricacies of joel and clementine's
relationship. just uttely brilliant, i was honestly
speechless at the end. WOOOOW. so who else has seen it and
what does everyone think?

we are memories written on time like words on a page...

focused on a pivot point called now...

the future is only as probable as the past...

all we have is now...

this is for you.

"this Kaufman script takes the film-goer on a ride to prove
that's what it's all about. The only thing that life in
general and relationships specifically, offer are the
memories and experiences. Results matter little. "

it's good of you to drop by again... i'm not sure if we've
grown out of our state of assholedome yet... i'm not sure
why i'm issuing this greeting because, generally, i'm not
one to actually relate to people on this board... usually i
just post about music that no one cares about and that's
that... but i did notice that you have returned (if perhaps
only for a moment) and thought i'd say hello...

-ps i am a fucking disgusting neurotic piece of humanity for
somehow twisting a simple greeting into being about me...
feel free to disregard this post

in other news, i reckon i'm going to see this tonight... woo

It's shit. Just pure shit. And Jim Carrey cannot act.

well, i saw this this afternoon. i thought it was
brilliantly written and directed and i really loved the
movie, except for one thing - the acting. and bear in mind,
i went in with no prejudices about this film - i give actors
the benefit of the doubt with rare exceptions.

i really tried to get into the movie, but every time jim
carrey said something, it was like he was the same exact
character as charlie kaufman (nicholas cage) in adaptation
(the neurotic, middle-aged guy who's intensely, painfully
nervous around women and can't talk to them at all). and he
and kate winslet had their moments where the acting was
good, but overall, it prevented me from really believing
them. i just felt like kaufman wrote himself into a movie
he should have stayed out of.

aside from that one element, i thought the movie was really
beautiful and inspired. gondry shone through with his
innovative, off-beat directing style. i loved how the whole
thing was very surreal and basically one long dream
sequence. the writing was genius, as one would expect.

i saw it with some friends, none of whom had a problem with
the acting - they all loved it. so maybe it's just me -
maybe i was being too picky. but in all honesty, i felt the
acting detracted from the movie. which is actually
upsetting, given how great a movie it is.

i was just wondering what others thought about the acting...
anyone else think it was too forced?

yeah, actually the acting seemed a little bit off at
parts... to be honest i think it was as much an error with
the script as it was the acting though... didn't quite mesh
at all times... but it was pretty interesting for the most
part...

i really dont get how anyone can have a single thing
negative to say about this film. i just dont get it. its
darn-near perfect.

i don't know man... i'd definitely say it was quite good...
but i'm still kind of weary of the gimmickry of a lot of
directors these days...

i dont think anything gondry has ever done is a gimmick... a
carefully planned and timed out illusion, yes. but a gimmick
entails something being solely done to make a buck, and i
hardly think gondry could ever qualify as box-office fare.

just curious what particular things you thought were
gimmicks.

offline DeadEight from vancouver (Canada) on 2004-03-21 01:37 [#01111833]

well i'm not necessarily saying that there were gimmicky
things about it... but like i said, i am kind of weary of
that type of thing in movies like these... i'm weary of it,
specifically in this film, because of Kaufmann's track
record of being the king of crazy scripts... and let's face
it, this movie shares a lot with several other films
kaufmann has written...

i dunno, i just feel like i have to see it again before i
can really be certain of any judgement i might pass on it...
and there are some films where i certainly don't have to do
that, because you can feel their perfection in everything
that happens in them.... so i guess this is a long-winded
way of saying i disagree with the idea that this film is
perfect...

i dont think his writing is "crazy"... it seems like
something elderly people would say about it. this movie is
by no means uncoherent. its a bit quirky, but in a very
real-life way.

and as for kauffman's writing, thank GOD that someone is
finally writing good films in hollywood. he's gonna do for
film what vaunegut did for lit, and i couldnt be happier.

offline DeadEight from vancouver (Canada) on 2004-03-21 01:54 [#01111838]

i don't mean crazy like our parents mean crazy... i know
exactly what you are talking about that and i don't mean it
that way at all... i watch shit a million times less
coherent than this and it doesn't bother me one iota...

i feel like i'm defending a stance that i don't really care
to take here... cause i thought the film was one of the best
i've seen in that's come out in the last year or so... but
stanley kauffman is not the best thing american cinema has
to offer these days... you probably aren't even saying
that... i think i just need to be a part of a conversation
right now or something... who knows...

i wouldn't argue that for a second... adaptation and this
have been two of my favourite films to come down the
hollywood pipes recently... but i must air my preference for
the stylings of wes anderson and gus van sant... wes
anderson especially...

the predominant materialist model of reality is starting to
weigh very heavily on our world.

i'm very glad to see charlie kaufman pulling his thumb from
the dyke, without judging, attacking or taking for granted
the connections between people.

we're overdue for a flood, i think.

i thought the acting was fantastic.

i also really loved how it took something that could easily
have been just a gimmik movie, but rather than just present
a couple rules and let the movie pan out, it thoroughly
explored every aspect of the gimmik. it shows the
procedure, it shows the characters before and after and
during the procedure. and it shows the effects on many
characters. it is this domino effect that i found really
fascinating. Like Memento, but with more facets i guess.

i wrote a review of it at netflix which i kinda explain this
better.

if ya wanna read it...

I thought it was really well done, and a breath of fresh air
compared to the the current competition. I haven't yet seen
Adaptation (partly because I'm not a great Nic Cage fan) but
I will soon.

But yeah, great film, really good - has its own aura.
