by gus van sant...i just saw it. this is probably the most
minimalistic film i have ever seen - but i can totally
relate to it. there was like 2 pages of dialogue, and i bet
most of it was just casual talk between damon and affleck
(as they're friends in real life as well).
there are some scenes that last like 10 minuts and they're
just walking not saying anything camera doesn't move...but
in combination with awesone music (arvo part) it gives great
effect.
i bet they didn't spend much money on this, but the outcome
is brilliant.

anyone else seen this?

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck? I hate Ben Affleck... but the
movie sounds cool...

i really should see this...

have you seen any Bresson/Resnais/Tarkovsky/Antonioni ? i'm
just curious because i wonder how Gerry compares to their
films (as far as minimalism is concerned)?

but it is Matt Damon then? I don't much like him either, but
the movie does sound cool... I'll probably never have a
chance to see it here though!

funkmaster...yes, it was matt damon, i actually liked him in
some movies he's good imo.

yeah, the camera work and photography are great...

btw, it doesn't really have the same touch as tarkovsky,
this one is like warmer if you know what i mean (not beacuse
it's hapening in the desert tho hehe)

something about that actually...

yeah, i wasn't really expecting it to be like tarkovsky... i
was just trying to get a sense of how sparse the dialog
is...

haha
from interview with van sant:
"Q: There's one shot that sticks in my head in which Matt's
in the distance at one end of the shot and Casey's at the
other end of the shot, and they trudge for what seems like
10 minutes.

A: It's seven minutes. We shot 10 minutes, but we cut it
short.

Q: How do you decide where to cut something like that?

A: Well, it used to be eight minutes. [Smiles an ironic
smile.] But I thought maybe it was going on too long. I
mean, seven minutes -- when you start talking in those
lengths. There is a rhythm, but it's so elongated that it's
more like an impressionistic rhythm. Other types of rhythm,
when they're like under 20 seconds, it's more like a musical
rhythm. We did a bunch of different takes of them walking
and we chose one that we liked. We cut the beginning and the
end off, mostly based on camera movement or placing. Then we
had this eight-minute take that at some point I made seven
minutes. "

I guess you are right but from what I have read here and
there gerry has no flow in its visuals... it is basically
static. Elephant was full of detail in its images but gerry
is situated in a fucking desert!!! I don't know when I'm
stuck watching or doing something too minimal my brain emits
cancerous thoughts of killing sprees etc. One day I may
loose control!!!!

it's true, it's extremly static-that 7 minute scene of them
walking one behind the other is static, but there are
beautiful colours, and their slow walking goes great with
music. it was much about colors, it was like images i
imagine when i listen to some tunes by boc or casino vs.
japan...

in case anyone want's to read the whole interview with
van sant

influence of hallucinogenous substances - maybe there's some
connection with boc

i saw this in the cinema and i thought it was excellent,
very riveting and affecting. i think many people will see
it and wonder "where's the movie?" uncommercial to say the
least, but infused with slow rhythms rolling through vast
landscapes. see it in the cinema, if you can. better to be
immersed in the image.

"many people will see
it and wonder "where's the movie?"

im sure people who only watch hollywood production won't see
this...so actually that mean not many ppl will see it :)

for real tho...i know what you mean
those long scenes are perfect for thinking during film, you
can totally take it any direction you want...you can
actually analyze it during watching

i think when i saw it i thought "it would be really great to
see that while incredibly high."

...as long as you maintain your focus and attention span, as
there is almost no action and the film changes very slowly.
