Mastered by the Guy at the Exchange is now officially my favorite CD. I could listen to it all day every day, eclipsing even The Books. It has a lot in common with The Books, except it's cleverer and funnier and packs in more instruments and sounds and larfs per.
I just read this interview with the fella. Damn I gotta get my hands on that first album. Anyone heard it?
There is a pill to make you feel better and its name is Max Tundra.

I have it I'm sure but not really listened to it much. Check out the cover of Tell It To My Heart though, that's a classic :)

that whole learning every instrument thing... sure good for him for wanting to do it all...
but youd think it would perhaps impact the quality of the music? To REALLY play an instrument well, and to be able to control the subtle nuances, it takes years of practice.
I would think hes kind of robbing himself of a better performance?
But hey, I havnt heard the guy... maybe its meant to sound "amature"

I didn't listen to MBGATE much at first. I found it off-putting. Then it started clicking with me, and now I think it's genius. He has great original melodies, tricky arrangements, oddball blends of sounds, and he makes it work.
Zeus - I agree with you that it takes years to become truly proficient on an instrument but once you can play a few instruments you can pick up a new one and be good enough to play a tune without embarrassing yourself in a matter of days.

One of my friends didn't want this, so I bought it from him. He was an emo kid and didn't get it. I loved it. I let my friend up at school borrow it, and he loved it so much that he said Max Tundra's one of his new favorite artists and offered me money for the CD, which I reluctantly sold him. Who would've guessed..

I've said it before and I'll say it again. MBGATE is one of the best electronic albums ever.

My love for this album has now turned into a dangerous obsession with Ben Jacobs himself. I'm considering hiring a sorcerer to steal his songwriting ability, or a french chef to cook his brain in a light sauce so that I may gain his musical wisdom by eating it.
How does he come up with songs that are so idiomatic and flavorful, but still original? It's like a blend of show tunes, exotica, cartoon music, game music, classical and prog.

i'm bumping this cause max tundra is sweet... plus i'd like to mention (for those who have to put up with me in the here and nowedness of the board at its current temporal location) how ridiculous it is that i come and bump like 7 different topics and then people must come on and be like "whoa all these topics got bumped... mondo board action! ... goddamnit... it's just DeadEight tacking on pointless comments to a whole bunch of threads... dfgdslfg!"
