tune in live! guest mix #1

first of all... what the hell is this lazy link
thing?????????! omg!!!! :P

*freaked out*

anyway, today for the first time in the near 3 year history
of my college radio show, i am playing someone else's
selection. john book is a guy i handpicked because he is a
scary record collector with even scarrier knowledge of and
unique taste in music. so today's mix is 2 hours of funk,
soul, rock, hawaiian music, novelty music, hip-hop,
dancehall, and a tiny bit of techno (barely anything, just
so you know). it's a really well done mix, fluid, highly
thematic, and with lots of great edits, as john book is an
instrumental hip-hop (think coldcut..) artist as well as a
record collector.

this lazy link thing is still freaking me out. i figured out
that it's how many characters till the message is too big,
but it just looks WEIRD!

so, as usual, you can listen live with this link:
warp radio (no relation to warp records)

unlike every other show, i actually put the playlist online
beforehand. if you don't sound so sure about this week's
show, check the complete playlist. lots of obscure music but
also some stuff you should know, and again, most of the
songs i like a lot and very little of it is what i play
normally.
today's guest mix tracklisting

i'll be on air in 15 minutes, please post comments, i'm
curious if people are appreciating what i'm doing this month
with the guest mixes and this guy's selections in
particular. i know not all of you listen to just IDM.

ok, hope everyone's well, talk to you during the show/

I'll try and catch it.

btw, the Lazy Link isn't anything to do with the character
could it just pastes this LAZY_TITLE on the screen for you
and you stick the address and titles and stuff in yo'self.

does this remind anyone else of early dj shadow? because
almost everything in this mix was new to me (and half of the
artists i'd never heard of) i'm not sure what is original
and what is a product of john remixing.. anyway it's quite
good

lazy link lazy link lazy link

mc_303 you know what's funny, i didn't bring a printout of
the tracklisting so i'm listening to it like anyone who has
no clue what they're hearing.. i know who's in it but i
don't remember the order and i'd rather not check (more fun
this way). yea cut chemist has worked w/ shadow many a time

nigel yes it's a direct line here in the studio

i reckon the tunes hes playing are even closer to the sound
of the early dj food records (the 'jazz brakes' series) than
they are to shadow.

there used to be a really good unofficial shadow site a few
years ago which had a samples page, where vinyl junkies
contributed + compiled lists of the records shadow had
sampled in all of his releases. from the early eps right
through to the first unkle album.
cant find it anywhere now though.

im enjoying all this by the way.

hey acrid guess what? JOHN BOOK RUNS THAT SITE NOW! the
original dj shadow samples site owner gave him the site a
year or two ago and now he runs it privately. the link isn't
permanent because record companies were finding out about
uncleared samples and suing shadow, but if you join the
mailing list for the site you get the new link every week or
two.

good call on dj food, i hear the similarity there, too.
seamless mixing between the cut chemist track and his own
music as crut.

sweet..
i'd heard that that site was having to shift, pirate-radio
style, on a regular basis. happy coincidence that john book
is the man currently responsible for it's welfare though.
i always found it really interesting. a lot of the samples
you can spot yourself, but some just leave you stumped.
thanks for the pointer.

by the way, it must be nice sitting back and enjoying your
own show!

yea i've never been so relaxed during my show, haha.. the
only downfall is that eventually after all these guest mixes
i'm going to miss picking songs for myself since i only have
a couple months till the end of the school year. i might
pick up someone else's show this month if they need a sub
just so i can do a regular show, as cool as it is to have
people make exclusive mixes for my show. SPEAKING OF,
EVERYONE NAG DOBBIN TILL HE MAKES ONE! it's getting down to
the wire.

i hope people appreciate all the remixing, john used both
software and turntables

yup tis fat.

nice to hear the dream warriors.. lots of memories from when
that first came out. my girlfriend got a copy imported a
year or two ago. this was definitely one of their best
tracks though. th lp is pretty inconsistent.
was first reminded of how great this tune is whe austin
powers came out..

yea that "my definition" song was hilarious, i wish i knew
more about the group.. reminded me a little of stetsasonic
but of course i recognized the music from austin powers..

here comes daddy freddy, the IDMers here may know him from
the bug's album

Johnny Harris-Footprints On The Moon

this is one of the BEST in the mix.. i don't know who the
guy is but fantastic music.. i wonder if shadow sampled this
or if he plans to

dream warriors..

more dream warriors..

and lyrics for 'my definition'..

the 'turn over the record' stuff was hilarious.
some nice tunes in this mix.

nice to hear your voice titsworth!

good ol' live radio..

thanks for the links and yea the turn over the record bits
were hilarious and pretty clever

the song that's on now was later interpolated by mos def on
the black on both sides album, i think he sings this melody
at the beginning of "mr. n***a" (see mos i didn't say it)

anyone else really enjoying this mix? what do you think?
like i said, almost none of this is stuff i'd normally play
but i think it's excellent and well worth hearing

no worries.

im enjoying this mix.
some stuff ive heard..
some stuff i own..
some stuff i haven't heard before..
but im liking it. not the kind of stuff i play regularly
[enough?]
but good to put on every now and again.
i like this sax solo.
reminds me of courtney pine's contribution to 'courtney
blows' on soul2soul's '1990:a new decade' lp.
