all that Mo´Wax stuff, that they were at such pains to say
wasn't Trip Hop, DJ Shadow, DJ Krush, Sam Sever, UNKLE,
Howie B. I may be wrong, though if they say it isn't Trip
Hop it most definitely is.

ok. the counter thingy is the amount of characters you have
left to use in your post. It decreases as you write, as you
might notice.

its just another horrible made up media term. even more
meaningless than idm.. everyone tagged with it seems to
really resent it (from what ive read)
if you like portishead, massive, morcheeba, lamb etc. i
suggest you try these for starters..
tricky | maxinquaye
dj shadow | endtroducing | preemptive strike
dj vadim
unkle | psyence fiction
kid koala | some of my best friends are djs
cinematic orchestra | motion | everyday
deejay punk roc | chickeneye
rjd2 | deadringer
mr scruff | keep it unreal

i cant say i love all of these records equally. but theyre
in the area you seem to be looking, so theyre worth checking
out.

aaah yes.. kid loco

dozier | i already said what i thought about "trip hop" as a
term. i know that cinematic orchestra is more jazz oriented
+ that rjd2 is largely more upbeat than some of the other
artists listed.. in fact, deejay punk roc's record
references the 80s electro records + is much more upbeat
than shadow or vadim.. but they all share common ground +
explore different avenues of the jazz/breaks sound.
it would be a bit pointless listing artists who sound like
massive, portishead etc - as they are generally seen as the
creme de la creme in their fields. no point listening to bad
impersonators.
i prefer to see music as a matrix where you can access all
kinds of different styles/sounds by starting with one
album/track/artist. if that makes sense..?

Yep, if a group make a big thing about not being seen
as being trip hop, they probably are...
(Pidgeon holeing is so conveniant ;-)

Some trip hop groups I like:

Nightmares on Wax
Portishead
Massive Attack
Sneaker Pimps
RJD2
U.N.K.L.E.
Morcheeba

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahh i remember
sneaker pimps..
their first record had some alright tunes on it. i remember
EVERY girl i knew that wasn't listening to nasty chart music
at the time bought that album when it came out. my ex
girlfriend had it and, funnily enough, my current girlfriend
has it too.
they were very talked about for a while. the singer left
though didnt she? just leaving the 2 fellers to do the
"difficult" followup album alone. seems as though it wasnt
up to par.
i have a 12" of 'post-modern sleaze' with a reprazent remix
on it.. its really disappointing though - theres absolutely
no low end in the track at all. sounds really flimsy if you
try + mix it up with other drum&bass tunes.

Yes there is, lots of them do it- sneaker pimps refer to it
as tr*p hop on one, as if it's a dirty word (even surer way
of ensuring they're pidgeon holed together, eh?)- on smokers
delight it says "hip hop is hip hop"... That's true-
however, N.O.W. is trip hop :P. If it's instrumental hip
hop, or the vocals are definately a background element
(think early sneaker pimps) or are sung in a soft manner,
it's trip hop as far as I'm concerned. Another quality I'd
cite would be that it's not aggressive or edgey at all-
almost "soft".

I don't get why being pidgeon holed gets people's backs up
so much, sure, there are some tracks/artists that do
defy categorisation (or span so many genres it sounds stupid
to name them: "glitch break tech house"), but they're few
and far between. It happens in all categories of art and is
largely for conveniance. Of course, all trip hop isn't the
same, but it makes it easier for purposes of
comparison/recommendation when talking to other people (be
it in a review or face to face). It's a lot easier to
describe portishead as sounding like "DJ shadow doing film
scores with a female vocalist" or under the umbrella "trip
hop" than to describe it without comparing it to any other
artists or using genre names..

i agree. pidgeon-holing is an ugly necessity, but a
necessity nonetheless - simply for convenience/speed. i just
think a lot of the artists you mention contest the issue
because (lets face it) 'trip hop' is a shitty term..
whichever hack chose to tar those artists with the same
brush could have been a little more creative with his
dictionary.

of course.. you could follow dj food's advice on the record
sleeves, and file under 'funkjazztickle breakenology'

"Yet another in a long line of plastic placeholders to
attach itself to one arm or another of the U.K. post-acid
house dance scene's rapidly mutating experimental
underground, Trip-Hop was coined by the English music press
in an attempt to characterize a new style of downtempo,
jazz-, funk-, and soul-inflected experimental breakbeat
music which began to emerge around in 1993 in association
with labels such as Mo'Wax, Ninja Tune, Cup of Tea, and Wall
of Sound. Similar to (though largely vocal-less) American
hip-hop in its use of sampled drum breaks, typically more
experimental, and infused with a high index of
ambient-leaning and apparently psychotropic atmospherics
(hence "trip"), the term quickly caught on to describe
everything from Portishead and Tricky, to DJ Shadow and
U.N.K.L.E., to Coldcut, Wagon Christ, and Depth Charge ?
much to the chagrin of many of these musicians, who saw
their music largely as an extension of hip-hop proper, not a
gimmicky offshoot. One of the first commercially significant
hybrids of dance-based listening music to crossover to a
more mainstream audience, trip-hop full-length releases
routinely topped indie charts in the U.K. and, in artists
such as Shadow, Tricky, Morcheeba, the Sneaker Pimps, and
Massive Attack, account for a substantial portion of the
first wave of "electronica" acts to reach Stateside
audiences.
