Your favorite drummers...

So I've been working at Zildjian cymbals for about a year
now. I'm their Graphic Designer. (Check out my new ad on the
back of Modern Drummers April 2004 Issue "Get in Your
Element") Yes I have the best job ever.

What are your all time favorite drummers?
Who do you see as the most innovative?

I've notived a big trend in drummers using electronics
(Roland V-Drums) on their kits. Danny Carey probably made
this a new trend, he is a god.
So what are your thoughts on real drums VS electronically
produced drums?

Being a drummer and someone who makes electronic music I'm
interested in these issues, and how music will be made in
the future.

Is there any good drummer albums that have a "IDM"
influence, would love to get one.

Nice Jivver. Vinnie is amazing. We had the Drummer
Achievement awards in September 2003 and I got to watch him
do his sound check up close. Simply amazing.
Look for a DVD coming out soon. (I'm actually working on the
cover as we speak)

I've found something strange. With all the legends: Max
Roach, Elvin, Gadd, Erskine etc.....who are gonna be the
next legends?

Well Danny Carey for sure, but do you think the likes of
Travis Barker, David Silveria, and all these pop/metal
drummers will ever show their skills and become legendary
drummers? Just a thought. This can be applied to all music.
Maybe it;s just my age creeping up on me but there doesn't
seem to be any real big contributors to the evolution of
music. At least not in the mainstream, popular music
business. Unlike the Led Zepplins Beatles etc..

mainstream forms of rock and roll is definitely not the
place to look for rhythmic innovators

offline child810 from boston (United States) on 2004-02-20 19:05 [#01082821]

True, but in the past it was. At least in my perseption of
it. (My mind is flawed in so many ways.) Ringo, Gadd ,
Bonham, they were mainstream weren't they? I guess the world
changes and the people who make music and those who listen
to it change.

I feel old just thinking of the girls cheering for the
beatles, pretty similar to todays N'syncs. Are they same
product?

OK I'm drunk, and happy. I'm glad I have my Electronic and
don't have to worry about the world's musical troubles.

Peter Erskine (mostly his Weather Report years. i'd say WR
always had the best rhythm-section, and i absolutely love
all the drummers who ever played in the band, too many to
mention)

also:
Brian Blade
Bob Moses
Rick Miah
Matt Cameron
Ken Owen
Lars Ulrich (the man deserves a lot of respect... his drum
parts on 'And Justice For All' are AWESOME!)

I have some good Lars stories to tell. (Some I can't)
Although I haven't delt with him personally yet, coworkers
say he's a bitch to deal with(yeah I know it's always been
pretty obvious he's a cunt) He likes his control I hear.
But he's a great drummer and drummers get the chicks; so
don't fuck with us!

i wouldn't dispute that... but that has a lot to do with the
fact that the format was much younger, much less corporate
then... their innovations only lead to imitations, because
it was understood that to follow the formula they created
would lead to success... i'd also like to add that most of
the jazz drummers i mentioned weren't mainstream...
certainly they were mainstream within be-bop and it's
various offspring... but all of these genres did not have a
fraction of the pop-appeal that swing did before them...
most listeners were at least slightly less than casual

each time i listen to 'Justice', i feel like forgiving him
for not being the nicest person in the world. after all, we
are talking about drum skills, aren't we?

but anyways, a lot of jazz drummers simply live him in the

I hate that when the drummer is amazing but the band
sucks.... Dream theater (ok just their singer blows) Rush he
just turned Sabian (The Enemyof Zildjian)we're so pissed.
He's been with us for 20+ years and they gave him a butt
load of cash and he turned to the dark side. We (Zildjian)
don't pay our artists because we're not cash loving cunts.
Yes I'm bitter.

i would have to say danny carey...his drumming is innovative
and organic. there are many drummers that have technique,
but not the innovation carey has (example mike portnoy of
dream theater). on the jazz front ive been impressed by
billy cobham, he is thunderous. but there are tons of great
drummers in jazz.
most death metal drummers shouldnt even be mentioned in a
thread about good drummers. speed doesnt mean you are good,
you could train a monkey to do the basic blast beat that is
used in death metal so often. also triggers are used by many
drummers, which is cheating ;)

the drumming on metallica's justice for all album was sped
up in postproduction, cuz ulrich couldnt play that fast, and
that album is just horrible when it comes to production and
mixing. ulrich is a boring and shit drummer.

I liked that monkey that played the beats on...

Way down deep in the middle of the Congo, a hippo took an
apricot, a guava and a mango. He stuck it with the others,
and he danced a dainty tango. The rhino said, "I know, we'll
call it Um Bongo", Um Bongo, Um Bongo, They drink it in the
Congo. The python picked the passion fruit, the marmoset the
mandarin. The parrot painted packets, that the whole
caboodle landed in. So when it comes to sun and fun and
goodness in the jungle, They all prefer the sunny funny one
they call Um Bongo!
