matthew herbert..

matthew herbert rarely seems to get a regular mention on
xlt.
i realise there have been other threads dedicated to
his work in the past - but for a highly politicised
techno/jazz/house producer with an interesting methodology &
prolific output he seems to be largely overlooked.

for those of you that like herbert's work under any of his
aliases, what are your favourite releases/remixes/collaborations?

some of his house stuff is nice but his jazz excursions are
just re treading ground that's been done a million times
better by a million other people, I prefer his 'wish
mountain plays' slant on putting a twist on things than his
adolescent politics nonsense that he's doing now. he's done
some nice tunes though.

bodily functions is an instant classic.
early phono stuff is sweet
radioboy live is quite an experience
and his mix on tresor is ridiculous.

i can appreciate all of matthew herberts projects!

Do you find his political statements add or subtract from
the music?

he made obvious political statements as radioboy a few years
ago. was it bad for the music. no. did it enhance the
performance. yes. but personally, im not concerned with
ones political agenda. especially in music.

he is highly appreciated aroundhere...im not all that
impressed tho, he's good but i have yet to discover why some
people like him so much. i have his bodily functions and
around the house but i haven't listened to those since they
were released probably.

i can definitely recommend bodily functions as being worth
another listen - especially on headphones. theres a lot
going on in some of the tracks.

as for the politics : its take it or leave it as sar as im
concerned. if youre inspired to pick up some of the books he
mentions in his sleevenotes, or follow up some of the
incidents he mentions on his website - then thats a personal
choice.
the music itself is not overtly political + thus can be
enjoyed in its own right. its not as though he fills the
tracks with didactic politicised lyrics that loose relevance
in a matter of months.

The Mechanics of Destruction album's pretty heavily
politicized but in a wierd and wonderful kind of way. i
think you can download it all for free as well...

I quite like some of the songs on Around the House too...

interesting.

yeah. 'mechanics..' is definitely an excercise in creating a
'politicised' record.. but you can listen to it without
knowing any of the history.

horsefactory : any more details?

the atthew herbert big band is his jazziest outing to date.
the other herbert albums maintain that jazzy feel but have
more housey percussion..
and the work he does under his radioboy+wishmountain aliases
tends to be a bit harder+more like techno in
feel+structure.
has anyone heard the double cd of remixes he released called
'secondhand sounds'?
or how about the mr.oizo remix of 'last night a dj killed my
dog' entitled 'last night herbert murdered my poodle'?

so there's more to him than just his music...i'll check
that properly during weekend. all i knew about him so far
was that he is/was appearantly bjork's boyfriend :)

i was really disappointed last year, cuz i missed his gig
with his band for one day...
also there was some remix album (not sure wether he was
remixed or he did remixes) that i wanted to get, but i
totally forgot about it.

apparently EVERYONE that bjork collaborates with becomes her
boyfriend.
nellee hooper,tricky,howie b,goldie,mark bell,matthew
herbert blablabla

check the link i left in the first post if you want to read
up on herberts political persuasions etc.

was this the remix album you were thinking of?

thanks.
there was a handful of remix records actually. mostly
promos. but that was the best one + the reason i entered in
the first place.
laters.

he wasn't bjork's boyfriend. that is american experimental
director matthew BARNEY, author of Cremaster movies.
matthew herbert is married with dani siciliano, who sing on
bodily functions and around the house.

i know.
i was trying to weave sarcasm into my post.
have you seen any of the cremaster movies?

didnt realise herbert + siciliano were actually married..?
not that it makes any difference to the music anyway | s'all
just idle gossip.
dani's solo record's meant to be out around now/soon. ive
heard favourable things so far. not that i trust the sources
implicitly.

i'll see cremaster III (180mns) in two weeks. my friend
fucked up the chanse to record on vhs all of them which were
given to one girl directly from one matmos guy. but he
watched tehm all he thinks taht they're not so good as the
hype...he usually knows things....
