indeed.
i just dont understand a topic like this though. for me. race + music are mutually exclusive. an artists skin colour has no more bearing on their ability to make good music than their sex, age, country of origin etc.
art is supposed to transcend these boundaries. naturally an artist's background has a bearing on what they create. but its not as simple as black/white good/bad..
there's great techno music made by both black + white musicians. people shouldnt be told who can create what any more than you can be told what you can listen to.
that said, i do find it amusing the number of bigoted, mysoginist, homophobic macho white guys into house music - as house music's roots lie in the world of the gay black disco scene.
ah, sweet irony..

it probably has something to do with how you grow up... certain demographics will feel more "a part" of this or that... up until recently the white boy in hip hop was very much an outsider... i'm not going to pretend like there was no white boys in hip hop... but relative numbers will certainly show that the ratio is shifting now that there are so many prominent white figures in the hip hop scene... by contrast one might say that the lack of black people in some areas of electronic music may have something to do with the fact that the demographic, on average, has been of lower financial standing, and thus perhaps had less access to computer technology... of course you can always point to exceptions: the uk drum n bass scene was totally integrated, for example (and virtually all of my favourite dnb producers are black)... you could also just point to the fact that the music that various racial demographics grew up on was quite variant... the difference between growing up with your parents listening to classical as opposed to jazz as opposed to disco as opposed to r and b (etc, etc,) can make a huge difference... (that said, my mother listened to a lot of soul, and my dad listened to a lot of jazz... not the first genres that come to mind for upper middle class white people, born in the early 1950s... so what i'm saying only goes so far in explaining anything...)

i'd also like to say how lame it is to talk about this racial group "stealing" music from that racial group... granted under certain circumstances something along those lines has happened... but it's not stealing... to call it that is to, first of all, equate any individual with their race in a manner that does more than just state what colour their skin is, but attempts to structuralize their preferences, which is complete rubbish... second of all it discourages races from listening to music that is typically regarded as being the music of another race... which is, again, complete rubbish...

can someone say how many black people attend idm gigs in us?
cuz here in europe you can hardly see any...for instance-the biggest electronic music festival is probably sonar, there were surely over 20.000 people there and i only saw like 2 black people. there were quite many japanese people tho.

i don't think anyone's denying that there are a whole lot of black artists responsible for techno's inception/development... but that doesn't change the fact that there are probably more white techo artists than black techno artists... we're talking figures, here, not prestige

I wasn't really talking to you but.........'talent', 'artistry'? yes it's taste but lot's of so called 'IDM' is variaitions on limits set by some nerd that pre-decides how far one can go. to be honest I don't find that very intelligent.
If you enjoy it on some 'self appreciating' level then good. There's no way I'd waste my time appreciating some non music with intilectual pretensions

i'm not sure what you are objecting to.. is it simply that the word "idm" was placed before the word gig? you do listen to electronic music that is not dance-oriented don't you? i'm not asking this because i'm trying to be sarcastic and rude... but i'm curious, what you mean

i know more blacks into electronic than white. i used to know a guy that sort of liked industrial, and thats about it. other than that everyone elsei know or have known have either been european like myself, middle eastern or black. then again, i dont really talk to a whole lot of white people.
But blacks are very into electronic music around here and in detroit. i have family in detroit, and all they listen to is house and downtempo.
I dont know where the person that originlly posted is from, but i'm guessing its not very culturally diverse.
