Ok...

so I got this external firewire harddrive, for my audio
files.

so... I have my computer on, with the drive on... Im at
work, and I leave to take my break. Well, I come back, and
the guy who gave me my break was like "uh, I accidently
pulled the power supply out of the hard drive"

well, now there are all these like black lines/dots around
my icons, and mouse. And when I minimize things, there are
all these artifacts on the window that is being minimized.

I tried restarting, shuting down, change screen resolution
and screaming

they wont go away

pleaseeee tell me my computer isnt fucked, and someone knows
how to fix this...

thanks

Have you tried reinstalling the graphics drivers?

umm, you might possibly need to zap something in the mac's
PRAM or fiddle with the firmware...

Which mac, drive and os ver?

no idea,

but taking out the battery for 10s + and then putting it
back in can't hurt (?).

well like dude said the pram thing i think it's
option-shift-p-r when you restart

also you could try resetting the PMU (power management
unit)

which i think is comand-option-shift-power button for five
seconds

but definately check apple.com they have a really good self
help section with this stuff

reset the p-ram by holding down p and restart.

thats all i can think of.

but if that doesn't work, hitting the guy in the kidneys
will probably make you feel better?

There exist updated drivers for the LaCie FW HDs for Panther
compatibility:

@LaCie

@Apple

Hope that helps!

that seriously sounds like your graphics card got zapped.
no idea why pulling the power out of a firewire hd would do
that, though ... ?

actually now that i think about it, how the fuck did he
'accidentally' pull the plug, anyway?

sure he didn't, like, do something really screwed up like
spill water everywhere and he unplugged the hd because he
thought he could save it or something?

really, it does sound like your video card is completely
toasted, or possibly your monitor (tried a different
monitor, or your monitor on another mac?). i don't think
pulling the power out of a firewire hd, which has nothing to
do with the video card/monitor, could cause this.

it was an accident, because he was using his laptop (which
has a black power chord) and my harddrive has a black power
chord. He went to unplug his laptop and grabbed the wrong
plug.

Anyways, oddly enough, when I plugged my computer into my
second moniter... everything worked fine.

*shrug*

Sounds like your first monitor might be failing for
unrelated reasons...
