I wouldn't say it was dnb. Some cool drum programming, the melodies are also quite nice but there seems to be a few fundamental mistakes; a few notes didn't fit together and I wasn't keen on the use of what sounded like preset midi sounds as synths. Some wicked ideas though, I can see what you had in mind, but I would say it was let down mainly by the use of what sounded like completely unmodified presets.

Thanks horsefactory. Yes I believe you're right I was concerned about some of the notes definitely. I need to go back and sort out those notes.

Nice percussion, drum machine rather than chopped up breaks?
Not really what I'd call DnB. There are some off notes, but my music theory isn't good enough to tell you what it is about them that are wrong.
I'd be interested to hear this with the synth patch changed and it appearing less in the track, but a nice fat bassline added in the places where the synth isn't playing.
Overall, not bad at all though.

Ceri JC,
Yeah I need to sort out those notes. Yes not really DnB but near enough so I thought I'd name the thread to Drum & Bass to get people interested.

What are you making this stuff in? FL Studio, Cakewalk, Cubase, eh, what? Never mind mastering, you need to replace those awful midi patches with some decent VSTis.
Aside from the sound it's an okay track. Don't feel compelled to add lots of notes especially if you don't know why thery're there. Try to get inside your melodies and experiment with phrasing like an actor trying to decide how to say a line.

Mmm interesting. Well I didn't feel I needed to add different notes. I felt it sounded enough as it was. I'm using Cubase. Truthfully I'm really forced to use presets a lot because my PC just starts to struggle.

If your cpu struggles, you can render VSTi parts off to wav when you're happy with them, then sequence them alongside other elements. A sort of 4 track principle. I do it whenever I use lots of CPU hungry things like Absynth and Reaktor. Of course, it makes it a pain to go back and change bits, but so long as you save each section as a seperate file, you can always revist and re-render it. I did "Cave Rave" that way and it took bloody ages, but I was happy with the end result and there's no way my pc could do it all in one go. There's about 4 instances of absynth, 2 muon taus, and about 7 different synths from reason in there, not to mention CPU hungry FX like ohmboyz delay, lexicon reveb and vintage warmer compression.

Also check out Synth1, which is free and very cpu-friendly. It can make some fantastic sounds - the default patches suck so go here and get some better ones that show off what it can do. It's modeled after the Nord.

fleetmouse,
Yeah I tried Synth 1 but couldn't get it to work.
Ceri JC,
Yeah I have done that rendered bits of track to wav but like you say its a real pain in the arse for all the reasons you explained. However I certainly couldn't use anywhere near as many as VSTi's as you could. At best a few VSTi is what I can use and thats it really. I really need more disk space to use more wav samples in a track.

It's easy - just put the Synth1 VST.dll in C:\Program Files\Steinberg\Vstplugins, (re)start Cubase and hit F11 to get your VSTi rack.
You have to make sure you have a midi track with the output connected to the instance of Synth1 you've loaded.

Pardon me, I didn't read the rest of your post - sounds like you already get the idea. I dunno, Ambsace also couldn't get it to work - the guy isn't developing it professionally so he can't test it with a variety of motherboards and sound cards and such.
