Kinda long story......I had a reputation for not liking IDM
when I first came here :D

I've seen the light now.

I used to listen to "electronica" and "big beat" stuff like
Fatboy Slim, Chemical Brothers, Crystal Method, etc., but a
few years back I listened to Acroyear2 off of LP5, and I was
converted.

Why in the world would you even come here if you didn't like
IDM?

LFO - Frequencies and Tricky Disco - Tricky Disco are the
ones that stick in my mind. I probably heard something else
though. My elder brother had quite a bit of the early warp
stuff.

i *hated* all electronic music, and then one day wandered
into a record store, Amber by autechre was playing and i
fell in love with it. Still one of my favourite albums of
all time

IDM wasn't called IDM 10 years ago. in fact what the fuck IS
IDM apart from a bullshit media invented piss poor acronysm
to suit their simplified pigeon holed outlook on everything?

IDM is a stupid term, but IDM is also a sound and older
aphex twin and autechre was never IDM.

Aphex Twin - Flim/On

can't remember which one of the two

offline uzim on 2004-01-24 16:45 [#01047242]

the first album i bought was drukQs... i don't remember if i
heard drukQs before, or sound samples from other
albums/tracks... i remember i was browsing at aphextwin.nu,
and at first i found the covers for RDJalbum and ICBYD
really ugly... =)

i also remember the first time i heard drukQs it was on my
bed at my grandparent's house, reading Evangelion manga in a
cold autumn or winter evening. and i had difficulty taking
the 2nd CD off the case.

i was lurking at the board, it was v3 or v4 i don't remember
but there wasn't any avatars nor anything...

i remember also i downloaded a fake "Cow Cud Is A Twin",
which was a great track, and i regretted a lot deleting the
mp3 when i bought the album (before having listened to the
album)... i have no idea what this track was but i remember
i liked it.

and then i remember the next christmas i had RDJalbum and
ICBYD, i wanted SAWII but i couldn't find it in stores
and... etc etc etc &tc.;

either

mouse on mars - iaora tahiti (unsure if this is considered
"idm" or not)

or

aphex twin - come to daddy ep

my trip started with Orbital - In Sides

The first CD I ever actually bought was The Box EP by
Orbital. Not really IDM IDM, but weird electronica.
Then I got into Underworld and FSOL the same year, through
Top of the Pops of all things (same as Orbital). I was 11 at
the time and all my friends thought I was weird.

I would say it would have to be Sun Electric on R&S Records.
That was back in the 'techno' days really before the IDM
term arrived.

You consider Sun Electric IDM? Interesting. Maybe I
haven't heard enough of them, or is it just that it's been
years since I listened to any of their other tracks aside
from O'locco.

1st IDM album I heard was SAW1

when i got into electronic music in high school i was
listening to stuff like daft punk and fatboy slim. because
it was high school. and i had a few aphex twin songs on my
computer.

i think i bought come to daddy because i saw it at best buy,
and while that might be my first purchase, my most memorable
one was in a beautiful place out in the country. that's when
i really started going crazy and mailordering stuff like tri
repetae, prefuse 73, draft 7.30, saw1 and 2.

I started listening to early warp stuff when it first came
out, in my brothers bedroom as a kid. I then went off
electronic music for a bit and for most of my teenage years
prefered rock/indie. In my late teens I got back into
electronic music. Only comparatively recently, when I
started DLing old out of print warp stuff did I find a lot
of tracks I recognised from my childhood.

I first heard Alberto Balsalm on radio p3 in sweden several
years ago...and was like what da fuck is THIS!!?!??!? its
was the best piece of music I ever heard. I was like dam
this music really touching the soul....and never heard
anything like it. After that I collected SAW 1 and SAW 2.
Before that I only listened to hip hop and old soul (some
classic music too) but from 95 I started to listen to more
jazz, avant garde, minimal composers, electronic music etc
etc.

In 98 I discovered my heroes BOC, now that was also a
blessing!!
