i just came back from a party where the dj played a live
set from his laptop stuffed with ableton live.
i loved the set. it was really cool, but i still don't know
what to think about it. i mean if he had it prerecorded and
played in winamp nobody would notice it anyway....

i mean you never know how much the dj worked on that set.

does it influence you if you go to a concert, that you know
he's playing from vinyls/laptop ?

i dont know, i may be a little dissapointed if it was jsut
"played", but if something creative/interesting was done
with it it would be cool, its hard to say tho, it depends.

btw sadist, do you still want that track??

ableton live is bomb. it is the most truely real time
sequencer i've encountered. you'd be surprised how much
tweaking and shit you can do on the fly. specially if you
got a midi controler with a lot of knobs.

if they play music that keeps me interested, means that
they're creative enough :)

you can tweak effects, time strech, "scratch", crossfade,
change tempo, all in real time with no glitching (if your
cpu is fast enough)

but you never know how much he is playing live and how much
he just tweaked at home. i must say that he had a LOT
patterns ready on the screen.

he was using just a mouse but he was doing quite good.

sometimes i mind if its all predone, but if the music gets
you off then its ok i suppose. As long as people have a good
time :)

and sadist: jsut email me when you want it or whatever (
email in my profile ) :)

i think the majority of them all have prerecorded music, in
the live performance they just add effects , change
tempo...or perhaps i just had bad luck not seeing someone do
the "real" thing live.

Good question, but I don't think it effect me, just because
I don't know,.and who cares/knows after all?

I run the laptop thru tha kaos pad and add fx, i mess with

ahead of time,.. and project nes games off my nesticle
emulator for visual aid.,.,

what i mean is - when i see someone os playing from vinyl,
then i see every his move, juggling the records, pitching
etc. i KNOW he's doing it live, and i KNOW how much work
there is in it.

when he's sitting behind a screen with a mouse in his hand i
know nothing...

offline APeSHiTZ from ¤BANgbANG¤ on 2004-01-17 16:58 [#01038496]

yeah i know .,.
when i first decided i was gonna start out using laptops i
made it clear in my head that itd just be beats and fx and
then i'd do samples and other fx on other peices.. i think
just computerscreen and mouse makes it really really boring
....

just enjoy!

I know what you mean, and ofcourse its much more difficult
to mix the records "realtime" , but it's the music that
count isn't it?

i see what you mean. i recommend you just enjoy the music
and dance, so you won't have to look at the artist. at least
this is what i do :)

oh mate ! since i mixed together dwo lp's (about half a year
know), since then i just cannot dance and enjoy music
anymore.... just concentrating on the dj...

that's fucking disturbing !!

would light fx and a few projektor screens help u out?

if the recorded set he/she is playing is prepared by him/her
then it is totally okay, i think. The step from a dj set
with turntables to a dj set on a laptop involves this
harddisk playing, and we have to get accustomed to that,
because it is becoming more and more important i think. Sure
it is not the same to be on a party where the dj is setting
the music live, and a party he is just playing a record of a
dj set he made 3 weeks ago, maybe recorded from another
party, but if the set is kickin and is suitable for the
certain party you are, then I don't mind

well i wanna get the kaospad for video so i can make some
kickass music video to go along with the set. and mix video
to the music ...

i was at a "sweet 16" party for my cousin and the dj was
playing records and also had alaptop running what looked
like winamp. i thought it was funny. it wasn't a club type
dj though

theoretically, the more "live" a performer is playing, the
more they can cater to what the crowd is feeling

that's the only advantage in my eyes.

hey that's right. didn't think about that.

on another messageboard someone told me that he's playing
records for himself... and he wouldn't get any satisfaction
if he would play from winamp <-- good point

im a live user, and its not as easy as u think, u dont just
put tracks on a list and go, u do have to time when to bring
stuff in and u do have to slow samples up or down in order
to mix i into the previous track/loop/clip. Then u can add
fx to them, u dont need anything more than a mouse. And u do
realise dj's prepare their sets at home or studio before
they go and perform.

at laptop battles here in seattle, at Chop Suey, i hear they
have cameras behind the participants so you can see what
they are doin on screen.

they do that there?

no no actually, but i could look a few times behind the
screen of the dj so i saw that he was using live and doing
something in it. but he had MUCH preprepared....

offline grinningcat from london (United Kingdom) on 2004-01-19 02:33 [#01040102]

yes it sometimes takes fucking ages just preparing one track
for ableton live... so if a dj has done a big set u can bet
he has spent ages and ages preparing it.. rather than
walking in with some vinyls and mixing on decks

the thing with live is u can do as muhc or little as you
want... i usually have tunes running, then with reason
rewired into cubase i can add beats and 303 lines that i
have made previously(or make em live) and filter em/fuck em
all in real time
