"I forr one do, and most of the time they don't prrevent someone frrom doing whateverr has been deemed illegal, just make them a crriminal when they do."
that's a pretty skewed argument.. you don't really notice the effect of laws as deterrants - you only read about laws (for example) when they have to be used. so yeah, that would be about criminals!
anyway, how do you know there are too many laws? I mean, how do you KNOW this..? did you wake up, made some toast and while chomping away thought "hey, you know, there are just too many laws..".
to me that sounds like just such a silly statement.
it's like when people say they think they pay too much tax. I never get that. HOW do you know? do you know how much it costs to keep a country's inftastructure running? or to have a functioning law inforcement agency?

I've never understood the concept of laws as deterrents. After all, when you commit a crime you think you're going to get away with it.

they only deterr good people, who should be allowed to do what the law is saying they can't anyway.

yes, but that kind of logic doesn't work!!
because when you commit a crime it obviously has not worked as a deterrant! you hardly hear about the people who do NOT commit a crime out of fear of punishment.
saying there are lots of people who commit crimes, therefore laws do not work as a deterrant is silly. on the same scale you could say even MORE people do not commit crimes, so it's a FANTASTIC deterrant.

it takes time, and money to enact a law and it takes even more time and money to remove it.
so they tend to stack up. but just because a law is in effect doesn't mean it will be enforced.
so sure, there probably are a lot of laws on the books that have no relevence to modern society.

The law is made extremely complicated to create the need for a class of law interpreters that act as the intermediary between the people and the law. Lawyers are priests.
They go on to become politicians and complicate further the laws and further alienate simple justice for the common people.
And don't even get me started on what drug laws are for.

I used to think that too... I used to think there could be simple, plain language laws, available to all on the internet (they are now anyway...) and it would be largely clear what you could or couldn't do. However, study it to any real depth and you quickly discover there is neccessity to the complexity and that the sheer volume of material and number of developments means that you need people who specialise in it (well actually, in particular areas of it) to make any real sense out of it.
Sure, there are some idiotic outdated laws, there are some horribly self serving lawyers and some judges are well out of touch with the real world, but for the most part I think it's a good system.

If there was any kind of system of morality in the world we'd have no need for lawyers or law enforcement- society would correct abberant behavior by itself.
The minute you try to legislate morality, you try to quantify something that is so fucking complex it can never be fully realized in words or case law. It becomes this big self perpetuating semantic argument that is totally remove from ANY kind of reality.
So I here by appoint myself-GODATALOSS- as arbieter of all wrongs- percieved and otherwise!
