maybe you've heard these three albums or the compilation
"manhattan research."

so you know that raymond scott was a pioneer of electronic
instrumentation and made these three albums of hypnotic,
minimal electronic music in the early sixties ostensibly for
babies.

anyway, i'm listening to a highlights compilation from the
"soothing sounds" series, and it's great. hypnotic
repetition and incredibly pure sounds, sometimes with very
high frequency.

tempo block
the happy whistler
lullaby
sleepy time
the music box
little miss echo

i'm sure this would drive some people completely insane.
does anyone else enjoy the music or the insanity?

i borrowed the compilation "manhattan research" from a
friend a long time ago and I thought it was pretty
interesting stuff, esp. the fact that it was made in the 50s
and 60s.... the actuall musical content was never to
inspiring though, as in I didn't feel much emotion. I agree
though, it can be hypnotic at times and yes, the synthesis
is great, its very pure..........

Mmmm... raymond scott is very basic but very nice. Very
charming, and amzing for his time. Although i'd dispute the
title "soothing sounds for baby," some of that shit is kinda
disturbing.

the soothing sounds series is very different from manhattan
research; much of manhattan research was unreleased material
and stuff composed for commercials, so a mixed bag for sure.

I'm a HUGE Raymond Scott fan. both his electronic work and
his weird jazzlike stuff in the 30s.

deepspace, yeah, there's a story about the sony engineer who
worked on the rerelease for basta, the dutch label that
rereleased ssfb, who exclaimed "you mean they played this
spooky stuff for babies?!?!"

i think raymond scott was composing this primitive, minimal
stuff with experimental electronic instruments, and thought
to himself "how the hell can we sell this stuff? we'll
market it as music for babies!"

Hahahaha that's genius. Just imagine confield being marketed
the same way... imagine the future generations :D

qrter, true he is as well known for his work in jazz and
popular music, some of it used in cartoons.

i remember when i got the soothing sounds stuff and was
playing it, my wife walked in and looked at me with an
exasperated expression that said "when are you going to take
that music off!?!?"

on my home planet, however, i am actually an infant, so i
enjoy it quite a bit.

I wouldn't.

I think Scott is a much more interesting musician/composer
than D. James.

i meant specifically the "soothing sounds" material, which i
think is well suited to adaptation by capable hands.
perhaps you can think of more capable hands than rdj, but he
gets my vote.

did you hear the "soothing sounds for raymond" tribute
album? not covers or remixes, just music supposedly
inspired by rs, but some tracks were preexisting (neel by
arovane, indigo florist by marumari) and none were
particularly reminescent of rs... still, it was a good
comp.
