Boards of Canada music videos?

BOC doesn't have any music videos, right? Has anyone heard
of a legit reason why not?

They make their own videos they show sometimes at their live
shows (WARP 10, Lighthouse), but other than that they have
no plans I've heard of releasing them to the public.

Once watmm is back up, all the BoC videos from the contest
will be up for viewing...

Contest? Was that a contest for watmm members or something?

Yeah, we had a contest that ended in January of last year
where BoC themselves picked three winning videos made by
fans. The prizes were a autographed cooy of the Ltd Geogaddi
each, and the grand prize got the autographed Ltd. Geo plus
a cool metallic MHTRTC poster, also autographed by Mike and
Marcus. Everyone else got stickers and postcards BoC sent to
me to give out to all the entrants. They're really nice
guys, regardless of what Morton says about them :)

Very cool!!! I'd love to make a video for them one day.

I saw the video for 'A Beautiful Place Out in the Country'
on VH1 ages ago.

It was crap. Marcus and Michael running toward each other in
slow motion and soft focus in a sun drenched field of wild
flowers, arms out open in embrace, butterflies flittering
around ther...

... or was that Iron Maiden?

it was Slipknot

The one that won the watmm contest was crap, but the June
9th video that came in second was kickass.

...Agreed - but considering the 2nd place winner created
that video on a 140,000.00USD editing rig, it should be good
:)

Music videos ? BAH!! What are they supposed to be catering
to an MTV watching audience?

my thoughts exactly, though I can't deny a well done video
is nice, especially since videos for electronica tracks are
generally more enjoyable (the music is more abstract)... no
pop singers doing goofy dance moves in stupid uniforms for
the most part, I should think.

offline Labium Sweat from United States on 2004-01-12 22:04 [#01030549]

Yeah, maybe if they release like a DVD with an entire album
worth of music videos that would be cool.

I just don't want to see Carson Daly interviewing BoC
anytime soon...

Yeah, it wouldn't be cool to like them anymore if they went
maintream.

why not

would you not like htem any less?

would they're "popularity" make their music any less great?

sheesh, you people are selfish

if i had to choose between
a) boc staying unknown except to us
and
b) letting mainstream know boc, and somewhat understand them
and what the music is really about , and helping them learn
about themselves

i would choose b in a heartbeat.

elusive... I'm not sure if you get the picture... Sure I
dream of a day when I can walk into a grocery store and hear
BoC playing from above me, but in reality, when someone goes
mainstream, the music changes... for the worse... It would
no longer be about making that music we've all come to love,
it would be about image, and looking good in their next MTV
interview with Carson Daly, and making an appearence in some
Hollywood film, etc.

BoC has sex with each other. this is confirmed.

offline ka on 2004-01-12 23:56 [#01030611]

Yeah, the state of music videos in general is the same for
anything else that can be turned into just a profitmaking
scheme: there's a lot of crap and some few gems. There's
nothing flawed about music videos themselves, if they do the
music justice. Frankly, I started this thread mostly
because BOC are in a very short list of artists I would love
to make a video for further into my carreer. Just wanted to
know if they were against them in principle or something.

apperantly chris cunningham wanted/wants to do a video for
them, but as he says they're not into that...

That sucks. Could always just license one of their songs.
Big money probably.

im sure he wanted to do that through warp, and if warp
couldn't do anything about it i doubt chris could (except if
he's very friendly with them heh)

I wonder if they just didn't think Cunningham's style was
suitable to their music, but he's pretty versatile. Oh
well.

Thanks, tolstoyed. Do you know what the word "incasinati"
mean? I only speak French. My non-Italian-speaking
inferrence is that they don't want to be incased
(incasinati?) in someone's (visual) definition of what they
are about.

well im a non-italian, non-english speaker hehe, but i
reckon "incasinati" in that context means, they don't wan't
to be in a club/gang/group with him.
prior to that he says: they have their strong identity,
they're protecting it and they don't want to get together (i
cant find the prper expression) with a guy like me, i
think.

thats the best i can do :)
but im sure woofer could help you with that better

I get the idea, thanks a lot. It's very interesting to
think you can get to Cunningham's level and still get turned
down. Thanks again.

no problem.
well perhaps this thing boc is doing (keeping it all as
quiet as possible) is a big bonus for them. when i got music
has the right to childern it was like the best music of that
moment, but im having this feeling these days, "mystery"
about them is the only thing that keeps a little interest
about them. Im looking to their new album with great
expectation and hope they can come up with something way
better that geogaddi.

i wouldn't be surprised if cunningham turned them down.
anyway this is what they're best at, whenever you read a
thing like this just makes them more "mysterious" and cooler
for that :)

"b) letting mainstream know boc, and somewhat understand
them and what the music is really about, and helping them
learn about themselves"'

if you had any way to gaurantee that this would happen, then
I too would go for it. But, how, exactly, do you plan on
helping every person who watches MTV learn something about
themselves from watching a BoC video, or more importantly,
even understand the music itself? that's why electronica
isn't mainstream...

Plus, when you put your music (or whatever) out that far
into the public domain you lose a degree of control over
your own work. BOC are better something that people stumble
into, IMO.

Cunningham has around 2 hours of unreleased BoC they gave to
him to use for the Nissan and Telecom Italia commercials -
the former uses a bit of "The Color of The Fire" and the
latter uses an unreleased track.
