Obsessive Compulsion Disorder is related to anxiety and manifests itself in repetitive actions; like washing hands or re-arranging an object.
Anal retention on the other hand is more deep rooted psychologically. Not as extreme as OCD. You may not even realise you are rententive. Symptons are not as obvious but collecting, hoarding and avarice are certainly a few. It all harks back on how you used to shit as a child.

i see. there is much i do not know. i just wondered if maybe obsessively collecting was part of it but i guess not.
hygeine is affected by anal retentiveness yes? not necessarily bodily hygeine but the state of cleanliness one keeps their environment in? i'm wondering because my roommate and i both collect things (a sign of anal retentiveness, but he is messy and i like things neat (to a certain extent). enlighten me, peloton! i look forward to your reply :)

my sister collects (used to at least) keychains...are you a long-lost family member?! jk
here is another thought, when i was young my mother encouraged us to collect things! why would she encourage anal retentiveness? unless she didn't know but why would she encourage collecting?

I think collecting is cool... I always try to keep things from the past from things I've been involved with... which is a reason I hold on to ticket stubs... it's cool... years later you can look at it and see the date, the time, etc, etc...

Cleanliness can certainly an indicator.
OCD is just anal retention gone a bit haywire. If you're obsessed to the point where you can't leave your house because you just need to wipe that surface one more time or you keep re-aranging the curtains so they're just right, then you have OCD. If, on the other hand, you like to keep thing clean and don't like a mess and you are pretty meticulous about it, then I'd say you are retentive. It's a fine line. But a noticable difference.
If you don't give two fucks about the state of you or you're house and you live a bit slobby then you could be classed as the opposite of anally retentive which is anal expulsive. Expulsive don't tend to collect though, more like give stuff away.
All these traits though, OCD and anality, appear more in people who would be classified as infantile.
As I said, it all stems from how you used to go to the toilet as a child. If you had difficulty shitting and or was embarrassed or was excesively watched by your parents while taking a dump then that can be the root of rentention. If, on the other hand, your parents were of the complete opposite and didn't encourage or reward and or neglected their responsibility in your toilet training then those people may become anally exulsive.
Once you know the difference it's pretty easy to spot the psychological traits in people.
