poor quality CDs...

i bought 'Sheik Yerbouti' and 'We're Only In It For The
Money' by Frank Zappa some months ago now (more than a year
actually i think), in a beautiful edition which was very
cute, a replica of the vinyl edition in mini size! (the CD
looks like a mini vinyl, and it is in a little... thing,
like the ones they use in CD wallets)...

...but it seems like it was a bad idea to get them in this
edition... 'We're Only In It For The Money' has a poor lo-fi
sound quality, this of course i noticed at first listen (i
had downloaded some mp3s before and the mp3s were better
sound quality than the CD!)... and 'Sheik Yerbouti' has
clicks in some tracks, but this i only noticed after some
time (some weeks or months)! now it bothers me more and i
hear it in more and more tracks, i don't know if i just
didn't notice them before or if the CD is damaging itself
due to time?! °_°

(probably i didn't hear them before... like on the track off
26 Mixes for Cash, i didn't notice them before someone
pointed it out... anyway this sucks. oh well, they're great
albums nevertheless.)

well, there isn't anything to do i guess, but just wanted to
tell, don't be fooled by the good looking appearance of
these CDs... (and if you have other CDs with a bad quality,
post it here if you want to warn other people... : ))

(also 'Rid Of Me' by PJ Harvey has a very low volume, i
listen at volume 6 or 7 while actually i listen at volume 4
- but that's not really a problem, you just have to pump up
the volume... and the album is wonderful.)

you could try opening a track in a soundeditor - if the wave
has strange almost straight vertical lines in it, those are
pops and clicks. they shouldn't be there. then you can check
if it's your equipment or the cd.

on Rid of Me - yeh, it is quite low in volume. I made a copy
for a friend of mine, who then put it on, starting with the
song "rid of me" - she cranked up the volume because she
thought it had been recorded too soft.

then the chorus came.. DON'T YOU DON'T YOU WISH YOU NEVER
NEVER MET HER

i don't have any sound editor, but i tried on my two
portable cd players (and on my computer if i remember) and
it always does that...

(and the CD isn't crached)

there were japanese import releases, with obi-strips... (not
more expensive than the others though)

i have two rykodisc regular jewel case releases and they're
fine
(one has problems playing with one of my cd players but that
must come from the player)

here i am!
of the mini-vinyl-cd release i only have one size fits all.
which is fine... so i can only guess.
of we're only in i for the money there are roughly two very
different versions. one with rerecorded drums and bass. so
maybe that accounts for the difference.
as for sheik yerbouti... the album HAS ticks and clicks.
it's from ed mann's syndrums. they're not very loud, but
very annoying especially if you listen with headphones.
well, maybe your cd's are just fuxorred... ;/

ah, thanks!! =)
i am listening with headphones, always, actually.

i know there are several versions of We're Only In It For
The Money... some tracks were accelerated in some editions,
also the early pressings were "censored" on Harry You're A
Beast and Mother People... or so i've heard

my copy has the slower versions - and the censored versions
too! (but i'm not bothered by the censorship for this case,
it's not like there were bleeps or silent vocal gaps =))

okay, then that's NOT the overdubbed version. it has a more
raw sound... the overdubbed version is more...ehm...smooth.

the trick in 'rid of me' is that much more dynamics than
most rock records, which is nice.

yeah don't you just hate that when the cd is the problem,
and not even the music... I bought One Word Extinguisher by
Prefuse 73 over in the netherlands, and it was scratched
when I bought it... and because of the circumstances I
couldn't get to the store to return it... the music is
fantastic but my cd would just go haywire while it played
and it bugged me... so dammit, I dished out the money and
bought it again... but this time here in Canada, where they
keep the damn cd's in the plastic!

Simple solution is to just MP3 it and rename it as an Oval
remix....

heh....I've been drifting off to sleep recently with the aid
of Raster Noton, but ALWAYS wake up at this one track that
sounds like a 1950s trans-atlantic phone call made by ants
on Ketamine...

I so need to redo that CD so I can get a decent nights
rest...:)l..
