After a week of to-ing and fro-ing, The Darkness's Christmas
Time (Don't Let The Bells End) was pipped to the Christmas
number one spot by Michael Andrews featuring Gary Jules' Mad
World.

Mad World sold 227,500 units in the past week, compared to
Christmas Time's 222,500 units - a margin of just 5,000. The
Mad World success came after it had consistently - although
marginally - lagged behind The Darkness throughout the past
week.

The two singles helped pushed the overall singles market to
its best week of the year, with Kelly and Ozzy Osbourne's
Changes also selling 144,800 units. No previous week this
year has seen more than one single sell over 100,000 units.

The chart marks a massive success for Sanctuary Group, who
co-released Mad World with Paul and Katie Conroy's
Adventures label. Sanctuary's second number one single
followed a week after its first, with the Osbournes' hit.

The Darkness's singles' chart disappointment is more than
compensated for by the fact that their album Permission To
Land jumped nine places into the Top 10, selling almost
90,000 copies in the past week. The album is on target to
top 1m sales before the end of 2003.

The album chart is dominated by Dido's 270,000-selling Life
For Rent, which beats Will Young's Friday's Child to the
summit - it sold 239,000 units in the past week. In third
place, Michael Jackson's hits collection defies recent
negative publicity by remaining at three and selling 222,000
units in the past week.

Overall, the albums market sees all Top Eight albums selling
100,000 or more, in what is traditionally the biggest week
for sales of the entire year.

why wasn't the single released earlier?
I mean it's really good,
and was featured in a movie that did good aswell (for being
independent).

gary jules is the best selling single in the UK this week
hence it will be the "christmas" number 1.

(this isn't definate but) the reason it was released as a
single was partly due to

1 - roland orzabal (of tears for fears) saying he liked it a
a lot

2 - getting TFF back in the public eye (they have a new
single out in january follwed by a new album and a big
tour)

3 - there was another version of mad world due to be
released as a single by pop idol winner alex parks and i'm
pretty certain it was cancelled due to TFF not wanting to be
associated with pop idol (and who can blame them)

nb - roland has said in the new TFF tour he will be playing
a version of mad world a la gary jules

roland will also be picking up the substantial part of all
royalties from the sales of the record

aha ok...
well the main thing I wondered about was why it wasn't
released earlier...
But I guess it might be for some of the reasons you
mentioned.

thanks.

Sometime I wonder if TOP40-fans really ever sat down and
thought about their taste in music. Because most of the
TOP40 just doesn't appeal to me.
It used to, and I don't know what has changed the most - but
I do really feel there is more crap on the top 40 than, say,
ten years ago.

what I mean is... there are many people who just listen to
what is brought to them and never care to look for good
music. They just stick to whatever is near them...
And aren't open to hear music that is new to them... bah

I'm glad the pop idol song didn't do well, that was
completely retarded of them to cover a Lennon anti war song
and make a video where they all smile and open presents
greedily.

gary jules' version of mad world is too tied up with donnie
darko.. so i find it hard to tell if id have noticed it so
much if it didnt remind me of how good that film is.
it is pretty amusing to have the most un-christmassy
christmas song ever at #1 for (you guessed it) christmas. no
jesus, mince pies, bad sweaters, fireplaces, gifts, friends,
snow or love.. just alienation & confusion.
not exactly fitting. but its a good song.. and symptomatic
of how a lot of people have felt lately i think.
