covers better than originals

trying to think of some covers that outdo the originals...
right now i'm thinking nin's memoribilia is better than soft
cell's. but obviously soft cell fans would disagree. so.
have you heard someone cover a song by one of your favorite
artists that you might consider as being equal, if not
better? maybe the bad plus's version of flim is equal to
the original... hmmmm

Primal Scream and Kate Bush - Some Velvet Morning.

Hell Interface (Boards of Canada) - Trapped (uses the
acapella, but the rest is significantly different to be
considered a different version rather than a remix)

I am sure that many of the remixes by aphex or autechre are
better than the originals

but is a remix a cover?

Al Green's 'I Want to Hold Your Hand'' is the best. Pure
fuck. And I love all the Dylan songs that the Byrds touched
up with their jingle jangle.

better version of "dead souls"

and if ANYONE says Squarepushers version of "love will tear
is apart" is better than joy divisions then your an absolute
muppet.

BUT IT IS BETTER I SWEAR IT! i almost listened to the
whole original but (you'll hate me for this) my brain goes
'WARNING 80's IS CRAP' and i put in squarepusher and go 'ahh
this sounds much better'. BAM.

i think i'm just too young to enjoy the 80's. metal and pop
from that time sounds like utter shite to me.

My Dying Bride's amazing cover of their own Sear Me

Red House Painter's versions of a lot of songs are better
than the originals: "Silly love songs" by Paul McCartney,
"Shock me" by Kiss, "Like a rock" by Simon and Garfunkle and
"All messed up" by The Cars to mention a few of them.

Teenage Fanclub's version of "Tambourine Man" by Bab Dylan
is also one of my fave coversongs!

the >€ cover is very disappointing

check The Gathering versions of "In power we entrust
the love advocated" original of Dead Can Dance, and the
great song "When the sun hits" originally made by Slowdive,
if these aren't better than the originals then they are VERY
close to being it

word

Since NIN is being mentioned so much, I like NIN's "A Warm
Place" better than "Crystal Japan" by David Bowie. It's not
exactly a cover but you wouldn't be able to convince anybody
who listened to both that it wasn't. I think Reznor did
"Dead Souls" justice but I don't think it tops the original.
Anyone like his cover of "Get Down Make Love"? I think his
cover of "Supernaut" (with 1000 Homo DJ's) is better than
the original. I hope metalheads don't target me for that.

A few others off the top of my head:

Sonic Youth - Rowche Rumble (The Fall)
Peter Murphy - Final Solution (Pere Ubu)
Bauhaus - Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie)
Joy Division - Sister Ray (The Velvet Underground)
[note: I like almost any cover of Sister Ray more than the
original, even New Order does it justice]
Siouxsie and the Banshees - This Town Ain't Big Enough For
Both Of Us (Sparks)
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Dear Prudence (The Beatles)
[note: I tend to like covers of the Beatles more than the
originalsl]
