If you were given the opportunity to transport yourself back in time .. somewhere around 1967-1968 during a period of great progression and experimentation in pop/rock/music in general.. during the recording of sgt. pepper, MMT, the white album.. to play for john lennon (and mccartney.. the rest of them) what the future of music as it stands in 2003/4 sounds like.. what 5 (or 10.. or howevermany you'd like) songs would you show him? he would not remember your time together of course, as it would (potentially) have a drastically impactful effect on the music they were producing at the time.. which would in turn change the music as it is now.. and, as a result, the selections you just played for him would never have been recorded..
consider tracks that exhibit the effect HIS music had on the [his] future (our immediate past, present & future) of music as we know it.

I'd play him- Radiohead- Paranoid Android- and he'd probably think it was completely ridiculous
Aphex Twin- Vordhosbn- and he'd probably think it was completely ridiculous
Outkast- Hey Ya!- and he'd probably think it was completely ridiculous
Sigur Ros- Staralfur- and he'd probably think it was completely ridiculous
Sloan- Stand by Me, Yeah- and he'd probably love it

And I'd play him some Oasis albums, and show him some interviews and footage of the Gallagher brothers. I think he'd find that pretty entertaining.

I'd replace Mr. Starr's drumming on Lovely Rita, A Day in the Life, Getting Better, Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite with a mixture of drum machines, recycled loops of his drumming and turntabilism. I know that's only 4 tracks, but they're the only ones I'd change.

Ha ha, I completely misread the question :)
Boards of Canada - pretty much anything off MHTRTC. They'd love the mysticism.
Aphex Twin - Mt. St. Michaels
Cutmaster Swift - Keep on Doin' it!
Prefuze 73 - Kev Intro 99
Tomcraft - Loneliness

I misread it to the effect, "which songs would you play on?" I just skipped through the Sgt. Pepper album quickly and those seemed the ones that would benefit most from beefing up a bit in the percussive department (I don't neccessarily mean heavily compressed 4 to the bar kick drums, just sometimes given more oomph or brought higher in the mix or even replaced with some chopped up breakbeats).

ahhh ok.
well all the beatles albums do need a bit of reworking as anyone whose heard the notable enhancements on the Naked album will attest to.. when was the last time they were remixed? like 1987 or soemthing right?

i'd show him five songs of the spin doctors.
hopefully nothing in the present would be any different, except the spin doctors would no longer exist.

Yeah, 1987 was the CD remasters, and they were insanely awful, in sound quality and packaging. I'm no vinyl snob, but in this case, the records are infinitely better. But 1999's Yellow Submarine Songtrack was the best they've ever sounded, better than LIBNaked.

haha too bad it's just the yellow submarine soundtrack
they really need to rework those. cds were too young and no one really had the grasp on digital audio at that time.
I've always noticed how flat a lot of the beatles cds sound. and I love ringo's rhythmic sense and the sound of the drums they used on the white album ... and on a lot of others for that matter.. but they're too low in the mix to be as effective as they SHOULD be
and there's not enough bass or lower sounds on any of them.. even paul's bass comes off as another guitar in the mix.
all treble.. not enough *bump*

Yeah, it's just the Sub soundtrack, but it's got a lot of extra Pepper/Rubber Soul content on it. Pepper/Friends/Lucy, All You Need is Love, Nowhere Man, Think For Yourself, they all sound much MUCH better... especially the drums in Lucy. Very modern but still obviously the original tapes. And Hey Bulldog sounds brilliant.

what about when beatles songs showed up on compilations etc (#1s for example).. were they remastered for those, or did they simply use the tracks from the 87 remasters?
and was the hey jude album/ep (the one where they all look totally grizzly (save for paul, of course) and even george looks like he could beat your ass) ever released on cd?
