watching the news is just like having someone shit in your face.
It's about as informative, and leaves you with the same bad taste in your mouth afterwords.
---------- The more I study politics and media, the more I mother fucking hate the news and resent the media in general. :(
It's all a political horse race, political strategy with no context and no history.
Fuck.

I stopped reading/watching the news a long time ago. It is all a load of shit as you said. Its either somebody's opinion that i don't really care about, or it's a load of lies from the politicians. Sometimes I wish the lawyers, politicians, governments, police and military would all go and try to fuck the sun.

"if it bleads, it leads"
It's all conflict driven. While the media is certainly free, it historically needs to provide an informative link from the people, to the government, as they are linked very closey in a democracy.
Present day media fails us so much in that regard.
I don't even watch the History channel anymore. Gawd

I disagree, with very few expections.
The BBC is pretty good, and the NYTimes you can typically count on to provide facts over partisan reporting.
HOWEVER, 99.99999% of all media applies way to many filters to product that reaches the market.
Advertisers, owners, editors, socio-economic upswing of "reporters" etc.
News = conflict, now a days. A bill working it's way through congress (an American example) is not news unless the Democrats and Republicans raise a big fuss about it.
The recent Fillibuster in Congress was awesome in that it PROVED checks and balances work, but instead of reporting that, it was DEMO v. GOP!
It's strategy driven and comicly moronic

actually, it's Independent Film Channel - they play some excellent flicks now and then, like documentaries on classic horror directors Romero, Carpenter, Hooper, but i guess it could be I'm For Cunt as well since they occasionally play "Y Tu Mama Tambien" and David Cronenberg's "Crash," which are basically softcore porn.

I do read the NYTimes, daily
However, the majority of Americans do not.
My problem is that with the large majority of news sources available, INFOtaintment sure sells a lot better than hard news, Americans are not properly informed in the traditional channels they should be informed through.
I resent the upward mobility of the press fixating itself in the news coverage today.
-------- In short, while the media is free and independent, it has long held the role here of conveyor of public business.
Analysis is expected, horse race politics is not. The media has warped it's traditional duty, and market share is more important than important issue penetration.
I remain concerned for the general public, at the disconnect and divide being formed, and the distrust of government that is inherently assumed when everything political is treated like a winner take all sports game.

the problem is incremental, and it's a genuine concern that reputable news sources are drowned out by the overwhelming trend of "news as entertainment."
not surprisingly, the people who are aware enough to be concerned in the first place are the people who are familiar with those reputable sources. but when you live in a democratic republic with a majority that seems to perceive the world through an "entertainment tonight" filter, and is unaware and therefore unconcerned about challenging the situation, and becoming increasingly vulnerable to manipulation and deception, it's an alarming concern.
when news is made a commodity, and profit becomes the primary motive for providing it, the news will be shaped to sell to as many who will consume it. everything takes a back seat to the majority's collective obsessions: their personal appearance, conflict, sexuality and celebrities... unfortunately, we can't go back home again. we will have to see these trends play out in the long term, and it will be painful.
so put on a happy face! : )

"we can't go back home again"
well said, even though I wish you were wrong.
-------- In the end, the only way you could be wrong, is if people just up and stopped watching trash on TV.
In the same way that people bitch about The Daily Mirro in Britain, or the NY Post in America, those rags are still around for a reasons, people are buying them, a lot of them, and keeping them in business.
I find the gap between The Wall Street Journal, which is pretty good about avoid a lot of bias, and The Economist, to be too big to bump a college educated reader like myself into the upper ranks of media publication.
I wish there was an Economist Lite that came out everyday, and everyone read it, and understood it.
No horse race, none of this shit.
I haven't turned on a TV in weeks, not even for college football, and I don't intend to for a while. I feel so much better.

only political oriented tv i watch is o'reilly factor on fox news. with him i at least get the impression he truly thinks about the issues and forms his own opinions as opposed to spewing the official party line.

however, the media, especially in a democratic society (make your jokes here) NEEDS to be an instrument of the people.
It MUST convey what goes on in government to the people.
While I agree, life can be lived without televison, and without news, representative democracy, I would say, can not.
I don't mind the news, but I do mind the sensational horse race shit on the telly and in print currently.
Perhaps if enough people tune out, news media can tune into what the people really want and need, but until then, I fear greatly for the educationa and dissemination of information among my fellow Americans.

My favorite "news" piece the local news put together in recent memory was one on the dangers of drinking water. The tagline for the commercials was "Can too much water kill you?" and something like "Water, more harmful than we thought!". Basically they did this whole lame piece speculating about the dangers of water, and in the last second they made their conclusion which was "no, water is good".
I also hate how there is actually less than ten minutes of actual news, the rest is just previews of whats coming up next which is just previews of whats coming up next ad infinitum
