BRUSSELS, Nov 13 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people) said it would be forced to offer European consumers a sub-standard version of Windows if the European Union makes it re-write its operating system, sources close to the case said on Thursday.
Microsoft issued that warning to EU regulators during a three-day closed-door hearing to consider charges the software giant abused the dominant power which Windows gives it over personal computers, the sources said.
The European Commission has proposed that Microsoft remove its media player from Windows and receive a heavy fine as part of the remedy for charges it bullies its competitors so it can cripple them or put them out of business.
Microsoft made its presentation at the hearing, both orally and through a videotaped presentation, the sources said.

The Commission wants computer makers rather than Microsoft to choose which software to install to capture streaming audio and video on the Web to play through computers.
The Commission said Windows Media Player's usage has jumped since Microsoft began putting an improved version in Windows in 1999, helping it grow at a much faster pace than rival RealNetworks RealPlayer
The Commission, relying on a survey of companies it had taken, argued that once Microsoft's Media Player is on every desktop companies will no longer spend the extra money to offer versions which can also run on rival media players, in particular RealPlayer and Apple's (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people) Quicktime.
Microsoft dismissed the Commission's survey as anecdotal and not statistically correct, adding that companies could afford the extra money to offer more than one format

Microsoft has proved again and again that they will take criminal action to extend their empire. I hope the Europeans tear them a new hole.
It's pretty obvious for example that Microsoft is bankrolling and directing SCO's battle against Linux - just about everything Darl McBride says sounds like Steve Ballmer is moving his mouth like a puppet. When the truth of that leaks out even the republican dominated american justice department is going to sit up and take notice.
