i love this game! : )
it's been a while since i haven't been amazed by a
video game, and i've been by this one.

i just can't wait to unlock the secret AX cup, but i heard
you need to finish all cups in master mode or else find a
F-Zero AX arcade in the real world... both seem very
hard... ' _ '

This game rules all, but it gets soooo tough. Never drive a
real car after playing this game for a while, trust me. I'm
stuck on the last cup, I want too beat it so bad so I can
play the AX tracks.

And the story mode is just insane.

my favourite course so far is Big Blue/Ordeal... it is
great... (the Aeropolis ones are also great)

i'm using the Queen Meteor ship

i've only been able to finish all 4 cups in expert mode for
now... and for the story mode i haven't passed episode 7
(but i'm not trying that much for story mode)...

It's at the top of my Xmas list. I can't wait...

F-zero was my favourite N64 game and in my opinion better
than even the snes original. If the magazine reviews are
true and this is better than the N64 version this will be a
very fun Christmas.

I have only the fondest memories of the snses F-Zero, but I
hated this one. I hated it because of the poor visibllity,
the difficulty and the fact that there was a lot of stuff
that had to be unlocked. I didn't like its gameplay either.
I basically said fuck this shit and returned it.

Ceri JC > it is better than the n64 version, indeed! : )

the only flaw i think is that the fifth cup is too hard to
unlock.

F-Zero Snes was my first game ever...

Yeah, what everybody else said... this game is very
hard! I totally suck at it, but i love playing it all the
same ;-) (i've only been playing it on novice-level so far!
And even that i find very very tough!)

But lately (well up until i got animal crossing anyway) i've
been playing the time-attack mode instead of the grand prix.
I like having the course all to myself :-D The thing i don't
really care for in the N64 and gamecube versions is the fact
that there are so many other vehicles. It just gets to
crowded sometimes. But timeattack is cool too. I like
playing the same course over and over, trying to beat my own
ghost (and everytime i beat the ghost, the ghost obviously
also becomes better... the challenge never stops!).

I'd say it's better than the N64-version. Except for the
tube-courses. I like how on the N64 they actually managed to
make those things feel realistic whilst racing them. If you
didn't steer through a corner well enough you could actually
lose contact with it and fly off the tube.

On the gamecube it's more like you're glued to tube :-/ You
can't fly off it anymore, and somehow it just "feels"
different racing them too. What a shame.

Otherwise the game is better than F-Zero X in almost every
possible way.

"Otherwise the game is better than F-Zero X in almost

I still prefer the Snes-version though :-p
Maximum Velocity for GBA isn't bad either!

actually i prefer how the adherence is configured in F-Zero
GX than in F-Zero N64... sometimes in N64 if you go too fast
you'd just all of a sudden fly off the course and crash,
that was pretty frustrating (in Silence for example when the
road slighty twisted, you had to slow down if you didn't
want to fly off and crash)!

i don't know what is realistic and what is not : )
but i prefer it this way personally.

(though i think in overall, F-Zero GX has more crashing
hazards than F-Zero X... especially in the Diamond cup! i
needed like a week (!!) of trying to complete expert mode of
Diamond cup, a lot more because i was crashing than because
of ranking... - but it was still fun playing, i was mostly
crashing all the time because of inattention... (ach, Sand
Ocean/Lateral Shift!!))

keep practicing surrounded, i'm sure you'll get better : )
i needed practice too even though i already knew and played
many times F-Zero and F-Zero X.

"(in Silence for example when the

want to fly off and crash)!
"

No no no... you didn't have to slow down :-p Just push
forward on the controlstick to keep the nose of your
hoovercraft down. It shouldn't be a problem.

Nevertheless what you just described did happen to me a
couple of times... ;-) But i actually loved it. For me it
really increased the sensation of speed and controlling a
very powerful vehicle. (ofcourse if it would happen all the
time, that would get to be annoying).

"i don't know what is realistic and what is not : )
"

Haha! yeah, realistic is a strange word to use when you're
talking about f-zero :-p

I can't really describe it... but for me the way F-Zero X
worked and felt, just seemed very believable to me.

Well actually F-Zero GX also feels very believable to me,
except for those tube-levels. It's a matter of preference i
guess :-)

"keep practicing surrounded, i'm sure you'll get better :
)
"

Yeh i know, practice makes perfect :-)
All the f-zero's have taken me a long time to master. But
the satisfaction of it is so great. Racing at 2000 km/h
without even crashing into a wall once... wow... there's no
other feeling like it!

I also bought Mario Kart Double Dash last week. That is
really amazing! To me this game is everything that
MarioKart64 should have been! And having two
characters is a great idea. It feels like it should have
been this way from the very first mario kart :-)

the graphics arent supposed to be impressive in Animal
Crossing, its a deliberate art style and I think it makes
the game better. a realistic graphic style would totally
ruin the game--it would emulate real life too much.

Marvel Vs Capcom 2 (on the dreamcast at least) is good fun.
Very over the top and button mashing type gameplay- none of
the subtlety of the normal streetfighter games. The 3
character tag super moves have to be seen to be believed
though... brilliant 2d fighting graphics.

Viewtiful Joe is on my xmas list along with F Zero and SSX3,
but I think I'll probably only get one of those... All great
games by the sounds of it.

Ochre: Yep, I know the guilty feeling... "Gah! I should buy
music/gear with this money..."

Uzim: No problem, I really like hard (so long as they're not
"unfair" they can be unforgiving) games...

"its a deliberate art style and I think it makes the game

"

Agreed! I actually really like the graphics. Especially the
way the "grass" looks (not like grass at all, but just those
geometrical shapes) is really excellent. Sometimes i think
nintendo is the only company left that doesn't try to
imitate real life with the graphics, but to make it "art"
instead.

I also adore the use of color and lighting-effects in this
game. You can always tell just by looking at the lightfall
what time of day it is (quite impressive in a game that
never shows the sky!). The outside world (the village) does
not look dated at all imo.

Having said that, when you enter a building, things do start
to look dated. especially the furniture which often
looks horrible from upclose. They could have spent some time
updating that to gamecube-quality. (I've read that Nintendo
put only one (!) programmer to work on the project of
converting the N64-game to gamecube. So it still looks
pretty much the same as it did on N64).

No! It isn't!
I love it. But then again i did not like the N64-version
which you seem to think is very good. So maybe this time
it'll be the other way around.

Trackdesign in this one is so much better though. All
the tracks are smaller, narrower, more exciting, better
corners... everything is just better :-D

This is also the first mariokart-game where i've really been
able to get into the whole powerslide-thing. In the other
games i never really understood what was so great about it,
and preferred to take corners in the normal way.
But this time i powerslide all the time. It's great! You
never have to slow down even a little bit, no matter how
tight the corner :-D

Man, I'm the MASTER of the powerslide in 64. I did hear that
the control is tighter in the new one though, so that's a
plus.

One thing I hated about 64 is that, even with my superior
skills (gloat gloat gloat), I still wasn't guaranteed a
victory in Grand Prix (I never liked Battle Mode much and I
heard the arenas are more boring this time around) because
it depended a lot on chance... people in behind could
destroy everyone on the last lap with a lucky weapon. I read
in a few reviews that was even worse this time around... so
that sounds discouraging. But I'll give it a go before
passing judgement... even with that flaw (if it's true),
it'll still be fun as hell. Just a bit frustrating.

"people in behind could destroy everyone on the last lap
with a lucky weapon. I read in a few reviews that was even
worse this time around...
"

Yeah... that is true unfortunately. They never did quite
return to the greatness of the original SNES-game in that
aspect :-/
Altough i actually think it's slightly more balanced
than in the N64 version. Only when you're in the 1st
position you get crap weapons (fake itemboxes, bananas,
green shells) constantly. But the player in the 2nd position
gets some good stuff now and then (like red shells). On the
N64 I sometimes thought you had to be 5th or lower to get
anything else than a banana!

The really good stuff (lightning, stars) is still reserved
for the last positions though... so unfair!

In the options screen you can set the contents of the
item-blocks for the Vs-mode somewhat. If only that option
would have also been available for Grand Prix!

I try to laugh at it :-p That's the best way to go. And
besides climbing to the top and taking out other drivers is
more fun than driving at the top all the time.
(but it's so frustrating when you get hit by an
unavoidable blue shell just seconds before finishline...
grrr!)

"heard the arenas are more boring this time around"

Yup, i tried them out and they all sucked :-/
I didn't like them on the N64 either. Only in the
SNES-version did i play the battlemode regularly.

"the control is tighter"

I think so yeah... it takes a bit of getting used to, since
they don't make the little hop anymore when you press L or
R, the carts just go straight into the slide... it feels odd
at first. But after a while i really prefer this to the old
controls.

They don't exist! In fact, games in general are all too easy
now... the developers want you to see the whole game, not
get stuck and miss out on that beautiful level or that ''jaw
dropping cinema''. I remember it took me years to beat and
master Ninja Gaiden 3. THOSE were the days. THAT was
rewarding, all that blood, sweat and tears.

I'll play Mario Kart this weekend... I've seen videos of it
and I love the art style. And few games have given me as
much fun (and frustration) as the other three Mario Karts...
I know I'll like it.

"They don't exist!"

Ikaruga... Super Monkey Ball... F-Zero GX... :-p

You have to look hard, but some challenging games still
exist.

In general i agree though. Videogames have become easier.
"Game over" just doesn't exist anymore :-s
In any game, when you lose all your lives, you can just
continue from where you left. Forever, all the time.
Whenever you reach a difficult part of a game, you can just
retry it a couple of times until you get it, and then move
on.

I remember the days when battery back-up didn't even exist
:-p If level 7 of a game was particularly hard, you had to
fight your way through level 1-6 every time before you could
give level 7 another try. And that way, by the time you
reached level 7 your hands were all sweaty and you were in
utmost concentration because you knew "this is it!"

I miss that :-/ In most modern games, i hardly have any
motivation to collect extra lives. Finding a 1up doesn't
excite me anymore, it's become meaningless.

On a different note, i just unlocked the "all cup
tournament" in Mario Kart :-D Now that was FUN! All 16
tracks (random order), one after another. Great fun!

get ikuraga if you want a difficult game.

as for animal crossings graphics, i'm a champion of old
school graphical styles in games, and was one of the few on
the art over style boat that embraced cel shading with
zelda:windwaker. that said, i think animal crossings
graphics are dated and would benefit from an overhaul, in
the same style as the currently are. they're quite simply
too plain looking and foggy, which can be explained by the
fact that its essentially a direct port of a nintendo 64
game.
i still yearn for a great 2d sidescroller on one of the next
gen platforms, namely sonic 4, which would be amazing.

offline zaphod from the metaverse on 2003-11-20 13:52 [#00958728]

and as far as videogames being easier: yeah, they are. i've
been playing since the NES days, and as videogames have
become more mainstream and have taken in a larger amount of
money each year, companies have begun to market games toward
a casual audience weaned on sports titles and racing games.
the extreme difficulty of the classic games is present in
few if any current titles. also, the desire people seem to
have to see realistic graphics in a title is, imo, killing
games. windwaker proved that a game can be expressionistic
and still be effective, and, as i see it, is more realistic
than the best looking games around, like halo or metroid
prime. those games demand my attention with their graphics,
and thus i nitpick away at what isn't realistic about them.
games were developed as an entertainment medium, and to
become art, which few have, they're going to need to do more
than simply emulate cinema.

I'm not touching Ikaruga! I can't think of any major side
scrolling shooter that I can beat. My favorite of all time,
Thunder Force 4, gave you about 5 lives. Using the infinitie
lives cheat, and playing my best, I died about 50 times en
route to the end. I ain't touching that shit, I have high
blood pressure.

It would be nice to get some major 2D titles on the 128
bitters... I really want another Metroid side scroller. Not
gonna happen though. They're not going to waste their time
and money revisiting the past when they're trying to move
forward with Metroid and Castlevania just getting into the
3rd dimension. That pains me. As good as the GBA
Castlevanias are, I'd something with some visual and aural
horsepower, like Symphony of the Night.

Maybe on the Pocketstation?

Contra: Shattered Soldier for PS2 has been completely
ignored, it's awesome 2-D gaming... that doesn't sell. And
it's fucking hard.

Infinitie= infinite

And yeah, games are style over substance now, the emphasis
is on framerate, gore factor, polygon count and attitude.
Games like True Crime and Grand Theft Auto spawned a million
clones. I'm old school and I love Nintendo's stodgy old
ways. I get really annoyed when people call the Gamecube
''kiddy''... as if playing Halo makes them mature.

yeah, i had that game before i sold my ps2 and games. it was
hard as hell, but a breath of fresh air as a 2d
sidescroller. it pains me that even the really great
fighting games, say virtua fighter 4, don't get much
recognition from anyone who isn't "old school". oh well,
games have moved into the same area as film, with every
other title being a clone of a successful formula or a
direct sequel, usually using that successful formula from
another game (see jak and dexter 2, stealing from gta:vice
city).
