i've got an iBook, it's wonderful. people are always like
"heh, it's so cute" cause it's small and i'm like "bitch!"

i like that it's so small though, it's like the size of an
actual notebook. and i can just lay down on the couch and
hold it between my knees and work on music.

i would say 'yes'... probably. you'll get a heated debate
anywhere you try to ask that question. mac fans are diehard
fanatics. i've used both, really liked macOS, but windows
2000 renewed my hope for the PC.

both can be great OS's. it's really a matter of preference.
macs seem to have a slight advantage with doing print work
because they have better color calibration, and that's been
their area for a while. PCs seem to be better for the
dev/programming side of things simply because they've got a
good bit larger user base to build on. and a lot more apps
are made for PCs in that area.

the powerbook seems to be pretty swell too... if you've
got a little more money to drop.

my experience of OSX (apple) is that it 'never' crashes.
I've got the new powerbook G4 :) Best computer i've ever
bought, and i'll never be buying a desktop again.

I'm playing with OS X.3 which has sorted out a few problems,
particularly with windows management. User switching is too
damn nice.

i ran a Windows 2000 machine for two years solid before i
ever saw the blue screen of death.

i think if you keep viruses and spyware off your machine,
and have descent hardware components, a PC can be a very
stable machine. apple has 100% control over all the
hardware that goes into their machines, so they are
usually a little more solid... but, the end user
pays the price.

that being said, if all things were equal, pricing was the
same, and all programs were written for both platforms, i'd
prolly go mac every time.

What sort of specs does one need for 24-track 24-bit, 48kHz
hard disk recording?

I'm so tempted to abandon my current recording setup (or
expand, whichever way you look at it) and get a musicmac.

I'd kill for a mac.

OS X, especially the new Panther, is dope city. They are
pricey, especially the notebooks, but I believe Apple just
put the G4 chip into the iBook line, I think last week.
Little more bang for your buck now.

Windows can suck it.

i believe it's the older architecture of G4 though. before
they integrated the 'velocity engine' or whatever it was.

i could be wrong though.

no, I believe you are correct. The G4 Powerbooks still have
that, and the iBooks won't get it till the Powerbooks get a
portable G5.

(the G5 tower makes me wet)

Anyone know about the specs? If you run cubase or logic on
an iBook, how many tracks of audio playback is a reality?
10? 30? ..*GASP!* 60? I mean simultaneously.. Say, on a
midrange iBook. One that costs an arm, but not a leg.
