for me the best definition ive heard about our music was
New Tones. its good , while IDM, known as Independent Dsnce
Music does not include artists like Steve Reich , szkieve ,
susumu yokota , and many others....

doesn't IDM stand for "intelligent dance music?"

ill say it again, idm was based off of journalism, NOT
style.

thats why you get autechre and plaid lumped together. its
because they are both on warp, even though style wise they
are very different. so now every magazine likes to make
connections. then they made connections with lesser known
labels.

so now you have everyone spouting off how so and so is just
a rip off of bigger warp acts. arovane sounds like autechre,
etc. when i really dont even think that.

its not a definition of sound. its built on label
association. sure they share similarities, but you could pin
similarities down for lots of things.

all in all, i dont care. the people who whine about the name
care too much. its like so what if it has a pompous name
title? i could argue that "alternative rock" has one too.

i never expect genres to make sense literally, so why do
people want this? its fighting a losing battle.

i think the right answer that just covers it all is "it
doesn't really matter that much"

from afxfaq:

A:11b "What is 'braindance'?"

According to the Rephlex Records Web site
(http://www.rephlex.com/):

"When Rephlex started in 1991 people said that the type of
music we released
was called 'techno.' People always say that 'things aren't
what they used to
be.' Well, the same could be said for techno.

"As the years progressed, the media invented more and more
terms to describe
the various sub-genres of music ('intellegent happy
hardcore,' 'psychedelic
handbag,' 'progressive bluntcore,' 'uplifting trance,'
etc.). To be honest
with you this made us confused about how we fit into the
dance spectrum. So
we decided to invent 'braindance,' a genre that encompasses
all known genres
-- to make things simpler.

"Braindance is not so much a style of music but a way of
life. It's a bit
hard to explain, but if you buy all our releases you should
have a better
grasp of the concept."

the idm label belongs with the sad cliquey people who hang
out in record shops nodding their heads up & down all day
and grunting 'yeah sgreat' every 3 seconds wearing wooly
hats and sunglasses when its dark

electronic music works quite well.

and I wouldn't put Reich under that definition- he uses
electronica, but it is just part of the full range of
instruments he uses - in other words, electronica is just as
important as any other instrument, no less but certainly no
more.

the point is - im making site right now, we will have
musicians on it , and we are thinking what we shoul dput on
main page ....
IDM site ? New Tones ? Electronica ?
simple word music is not enough here....i also dont care
about stickers on music styles , but the NAME could be
usefull as a simple and short description os music from my
site.

it depends on what kind of music is on your site.

if its all electronic, electronica could do the job.

"new tones" to me reeks as much of bullshit as "idm" - I
would have no idea what you would mean by it.

Always thought that IDM was a fairly cringe worthy /
patronising term (who came up with it anyway, tired music
hacks?) to categorise our favoured bands/music.

offline hyakusen from 8=============> on 2003-11-09 17:00 [#00942855]

yes but some part of this music is not electronic - thats
the problem

offline handoverthecart on 2003-11-09 17:07 [#00942880]

yes i agree "electronic music" is probably the best term
(perhaps slap on "experimental" as well in some cases but
not all, to make a distinction between it and club-type
dance music?)

Dumbest acronym ever. Downright embarrasing to explain an
electronic virgin. The I part, and the D part. So I
generally just call it ''electronic'', and if they assume I
mean Moby and Fatboy Slim... then fuck.

electronic music is the way to go if you ask me, it easily
encapsulates all the labels and what not and its gets the
point across to people who want to know "WHAT THE FUCK IS
THIS NOISE"

New Tones? That's pretty stupid sounding to me. IDM is a
pretty generic term, as well.

Electronic music or what Ganymede said works just fine for
me.

I don't know, IDM is fine with me....I just take the term as
more listening oriented then dance-floor filler.

from real noise music as it can be....

not really because "intelligent" "dance" and "music" already
have meaning in english. If you interpret it as the
meaningless sound symbols they really are, it works as an
arbritrary name, but even then there's 7 syllables when
"smuf" is an adequate unused english word with merely 1
syllable. Even if we used this word people would be too
stupid to collectively create a single definition anyway.
