Yasunori Mitsuda has really written something great with this one. Such a wealth of work, especially the variant "Another" tracks.

This has long been my second-favorite music ever produced, next to The Beatles. I listen to as much video game music as I do rock or electronic, I fucking love that art and the composers. From 8bit to 128, it's all great.
His Xenosaga soundtrack had some isolate moments of brilliance, but he was HORRIBLY misused. The game depends more on atmospheric sounds than music, which was a bad, bad move.

it was?
personally i thought it was a completely appropriate move. in fact i applauded the fact that there was hardly any traditional music. i mean, it doesnt make a shred of sense to include it to me. the only thing i fear is countless people who wage holy war against xenosaga and its anti-music, so now they might include it in overload, completely destroying the first games "mood" (yes, i thought even the machinery sounds created mood).
jaunty pizzicato strings and strummed guitar with violinesque sounds when you are at a run down docking bay in space? im not saying that this is what would be made, but as much as i like composers like yasunori mitsuda and uematsu, and a few others, its usually very traditional instrument based (there are exceptions of course). and xenosaga is so far from that...it just wouldnt make sense to me. even the battle music i found pretty innapropriate, but maybe i look too deep into these things. it seemed too forced, like, HERE IS BATTLE MUSIC! COMMENCE!
the story is very odd, dealing with gnosticism and nag hammadi scripture and what have you. but obviously im just speculating here. not saying this is THE ONLY WAY or whatever, but all in all, i got much more feeling out of the story and development of xenosaga.
in any case, some non-machinery related "ambience" or "music" would have been nice, but the machinery sounds work well. lots didnt like silent hills "atmospheric sounds" but to me its music. i fucking love yamaokas work on sh1, even if its just atmospheric sounds.
and im just scrolling up to see what i typed and its a lot of text and its funny because its 3:44 am and im talking about xenosagas music.
if thats not geek i dont know what is :\

L0s3r!1 :-p
I loved Silent Hill's soundtracks, Yamaoka is integral to the experience, because ambience and mood is his job... which is why I think using Yasunori Mitsuda was a big waste of talent on Xenosaga. He could have worked on another game where his music could shine, would be more at the forefront, rather than taking a backseat to the droning of engines and whir of machines.
You made some good points and I mostly agree. I think he did a good job, but he was the wrong man for the job on this game... hence the ''misused''. I agree that the battle music does sound a bit forced... and that awful lounge theme during some of the discussion scenes is just downright painful! The ambience of the game is nice, and effective... I think I worded my last sentence there wrong, I do like the atmosphere quite a bit.. but you've got one of the best composers in the biz and you're not using him... personally, I'd like more tracks in the vein of the U.M.N theme, that is some brilliant ambient work, by far my favorite music in the game. I'd pause it occasionally just to listen. I don't think the game would lose much in the way of atmosphere (a lot of the ambient noise is reserved for unexciting sections anyway, like that tedious trek through the salvage ship), and it would gain some beautiful tracks. That's what I would prefer.
I think the other problem I personally have with this game are the sections that DO let Yasunori flex some compositional muscle... the arrangements. They're almost too... generic. Lots of orchestral crescendos, dramatic string sections, it reaches Danny Elfman levels at some parts... it's not as exotic, subtle or creative as Chrono Cross, it sounds more like something from your standard Hollywood movie. Now, like you said, it would be a bad idea to have the earthy arrangements of Cross in a game that takes place in sterile metal ships (I liked that aspect, made me really claustrophobic)... thing is, that's what I love about Yasunori, the folky arrangements, the pianos, the guitars

thing is, that's what I love about Yasunori, the folky arrangements, the pianos, the guitars, etc. He's more eclectic than he lets on here. He can do MUCH better than this soundtrack, but there were so many constraints on him. I could do without the London Philharmonic Orchestra, but that's just me. I guess in some ways, it suits the epic scope of the game, but I like to listen to these things outside of the context of the game, and this one doesn't fly as well when seperated. I guess that's personal taste though, subjective.
So, I think the game's aural experience WAS effective, sorry about giving the wrong impression, but I would have liked his big Cross follow up to have more liberty than he had here. He did a good job, though I only listen to a select few tracks here and there. But hey, I'm sure he's a team player and didn't mind.
I hope he has more of a role next chapter, maybe they'll spend more time on planets and more traditional areas.

Hmmmm .... for me all time game soundtrack is Silent Hill 1 or 2, both have intense fucking soundtracks, havent got a chance to play SH3's yet, even though I have the game with the CD.
I liked the cheesy shit from Chrono Trigger great stuff, Xenosaga shit was great too... I dunno..... for me its a bit more of a narrow genre, as I mean I dont listen to soundtracks too much anymore. Metal gear Sold 1 and 2 had great ones as well.

Definitely. Some of the music in the Metal Gear Solid 3 trailer actually has a very electronic sound to it, there's a glitchy track where Snake is sneaking around the jungle. And the opening theme is awesome. Should be another great soundtrack.
