andre3000 - my favorite things

andre3000 (of outkast) has said in a few interviews how
"the shit aphex twin and squarepusher are doing - that
absolutely blows my mind" or something along those lines.
this track, 'my favorite things' from hiis new album, is
most definitely telling of that. basically, it's a fast
drum'n'bass drum track ala drukqs/lots of squarepusher, and
piano playing the popular song from "the sound of music".
plus lots of jazzy piano licks, reminiscent of olde
squarepusher.

so, maybe this is like his tribute to his "favorite things"?

yea it's a great cover version.. it's fun. i think it's more
drum 'n' bass than drill 'n' bass but it's nicely done
nonetheless.

he probably didn't say it blows his mind (a lot of outkast's
and/or organized noize's productions are better than
squarepusher's, once in a while even better than richard's,
so it's not like their stuff is brand new or extremely
radical to him) but he's acknowledged that he's a fan of
aphex, squarepusher, and a bunch of other electronic and
experimental groups..

yeah, i know for sure he's said that aphex/squarepusher
blows him away/blows his mind in an interview with muzik
magazine earlier this year. but what do i know? the first
outkast i've ever really listened to is this album.

the unsuspecting pop fans, who will have no idea of what is
about to hit them...

Andre rules. That track is pretty cool. Everyone should
own a copy of the love below. Speakerboxxx...ehh i dunno
about that.

the production on "reset" and "war" is better than most of
the production on the love below

speakerboxxx is for hip-hop fans.. love below is for fans of
music in general.. some love both, some love one or the
other..

aphex and squarepusher homages are mad old btw, as long as
these two have been making music there have been more
popular artists (in rock and hip-hop) who have been
borrowing ideas from them. some really unlikely people are
massive aphex fans, like lou barlow (sebadoh, folk
implosion) and pretty much every hip-hop producer worth
listening to.

except that i know that it is. i don't know how long you've
been listening to outkast but don't front because you have
other issues with them. i didn't say they do IDM/drill 'n'
bass/nerdy music better or even at all, just that their
production (and i'm mostly talking about organized noize and
mr. dj here) is on par creatively and often exeeds at least
squarepusher's in creativity and skill.

wow you peopele need culture mannnnn. how can you have a
thread about andre''s my favorite things without mentioning
coltane at all. thats the whole reason he did the song.
coltrane did like 5 million versions of it, each one more
fucked up than the next. coltrane is some shit that just
about everyone should check out. hes is the original master
of cool. CMON!

I think you're overstating things a bit here

and i obviously think you're understating things, either
because of recent personal issues w/ their new album or just
out of not really knowing them as well as i do. sorry to
step on your toes with squarepusher and aphex but obviously
i'm a fan too or i wouldn't be here.

name one song that they've done that would have lead to a
more blahzay reception of squarepusher or aphex twin

i'm not sure what you're asking. squarepusher and outkast
sound nothing alike so i'm not going to name songs that
would somehow parallel each other in any explicit way. i
think all of the outkast albums minus the first one can go
toe to toe with any of squarepusher's as far as creative and
exciting production goes. and while tom's made quite a few
boring albums and ep's where most of the tracks sound alike
and/or are just dull and about 10% as good as it should be
given past efforts, nothing outkast has released has ever
been worse than or even merely on par with the previous
release. organized noize and earthtone III (and mr. dj,
andre, and big boi separately) always push forward and have
yet to run out of interesting and even bizarre and insane
ideas. i'm not going to name songs, it's whole albums. pick
songs at random if you like.

they're different when compared with other hiphop.. and more
listenable than most squarepusher.. but I think andre meant
it when he said he was blown away by those artists' work..
because it is nothing like anything he'd heard before.. and
certainly more clever/complex

honeslty i dont see how anyone who hasnt heard idm before
cant be blown away by 7\

find me one of these recent interviews where andre is saying
he is JUST getting into aphex and that this totally new
music is blowing him away. because i really don't believe
that he's some kind of brand new fan to either aphex or
electronic music. i mean give these guys some credit. i know
what instruments they play and the music they own and listen
to. not just andre either. i think people write off outkast
(especially big boi) majorly and that's my whole point in
this thread.

outkast and squarepusher/afx are apples and fucking oranges,
so what's the point in comparing tracks/albums or using one
to slag off the other? also, why is it so hard to believe
that they blow dre's mind? if dre was trying to mimic
squarepusher on my favorite things, I'd say he failed,
although it is a nice inclusion on the album. squarepusher
made a pretty bangin hip hop track himself with do you know
squarepusher. they're both some of the best at what they do.
you're on my team starting first string, so why are we
arguing?

hahaha

you gotta be fucking kidding me

andre's album is a coaster compared to thepusherofsqaures
(meaning you put a wet drink on top of it, or play frizbee
w/ it, either or)

there is no way andre listened to aphex or squarepusher when
their first album dropped

southern-playa-listic-cadillac etc - was HARDLY forward
thinking or cutting edge

oh yeah i had that album before mtv played it - so im not a
real fan...hahaha (sarcasm)

"why is it so hard to believe that they blow dre's mind?"

why is it so hard to believe that they DIDN'T? besides, i've
yet to see any interview where either of them have said
this. they BOTH have said they're fans of aphex and
squarepusher, i've never read either of them saying that
they were blown away, knocked to the floor, whatever by it.
just fans.

"if dre was trying to mimic squarepusher on my favorite
things, I'd say he failed, although it is a nice inclusion
on the album."

only spoonz was saying it's like squarepusher. i really
doubt andre was attempting to imitate anyone specific, and
mostly it's a drum 'n' bass rhythm, not drill or IDM.
basically it was like combining coltrane's classic
interpretation of the song with classic mid-'90s drum 'n'
bass.

"besides, i've

therefore it doesn't exist. I see your point.

no, therefore someone needs to come up with it. if it exists
surely one of you for sure have a link or a copy of the
article and can quote it directly. the fact that not a
single one of you can suggests that it just might not exist.

it to go on a scavenger hunt.

cool! thanks for that. i stand corrected, which i'm fine
with. they have good taste in music and they're really quite
generous complimenting their influences (not just aphex and
squarepusher but most artists they talk about positively in
interviews). the sharpie marker was a cute touch!
