aphex is a genius

I've been listening to come 2 daffy and the rdj album a lot
recently. clearly these definately... were not albums of the
latest fashion meant for casual toss aside listening. THe
logic behind the sound seems universal, like if there is any
lifeform in the uinverse that evolved "ears" (where there's
sound evolution will make ears probably) they would find it
appealing (unless there's some human-unique evolutionary
reason music is appealing) THere is something exceptional
about aphex twin's music, and I wish I knew the person
behind it better. And I mean "exception"al. That is quite a
fitting word. I still have not heard anything that emulates
these albums well. THe ones who come close are more like
music scientists- or at least use sophisticated tools well
whether or not they know how they logically work (autechre);
they aren't "naturally" gifted. I'd guess there's something
biologically unique about his brain. I wish he'd talk to the
public more or just release his freakin music. This music
apparently just comes naturally out of him, I wish I knew
more details like how long the tracks took to make, or the
order and method of composition. It really seems he has no
rigid algorithm/method at all but rather simply makes what
sounds good. Every track is completely unique and remarkable
with only a handful of repeatedly applied elements/themes,
but this could simply be because these themes are the most
musically pleasing (fast percussion usually, that one
reverse a percussion hit accentuation he uses, the other
reverb a accentuation hit). Judging mostly by his music, I
can't imagine a person like aphex (though I don't know him
at all) doing normal things like going to high school. Still
it's a great pleasure to know him even as indirectly as his
music. He says he thinks about the internet and stuff, yet
he's said weird things like he thinks music is 1/2 boy and
1/2 girl, or something. That just makes naive sad/happy
sense, making sense of the world in such a humble way. I
wish he'd write a book about

I find that there is a certain feeling that something emits
when it is "right". Whether it be visual art, or music, or
some other type of creation, there's a certain feeling of
completeness and of balance when everything falls into the
correct place and order. I guess making something nice is a
matter of being able to identify this feeling and then
finding some sort of media which you can control well enough
to create something that fits the feeling.

Yes, I agree that RDJ most certainly is a genious.. His
music is so incredibly inspiring to a musician like me, but
it has a reverse effect in that my greatest attempts always
pale in comparison to his lamest achievements... I do not
strive to make music better than him or even in the same
echelon, but I do hope to be able to make music that strikes
the same vein in human emotion. I have never felt the need
to cry during a song until I heard Aphex Twin.

right out of him.

i think he works pretty god damn hard at it

aphex is amazing... the intricacies to be found in his music
upon repeat listens is unreal... and it all seems to fit so
perfectly... very rarely does it seem contrived... his
ability to create tension between "fast" and "slow" elements
seems somewhat central to much of his work...

It was posted my w M w... and I guess we're just not used to
taking these things seriously, God bless him.

Yeah, I think I'd call him a genius. He was kind of the hub
that I branched out from, exploring electronic music, but
I've yet to find anyone as eclectic and enjoyable as his
stuff is.

Deadeight, you point out a quality of his music I never
noticed before, but it's true. I love that 'human feel' in
his programming. Lots like his older stuff. As do I, but
the beauty of his newer work is that it's so fluid. Ever
changing but fluid. He uses very bold drum sounds compared
to Samples you'd find on soulseek. He likes to ramp the
attack on a snare or bassdrum right before the main bassdrum
or snare. Like vooom Bap. I think he's multitracking out the
ass, now.. Putting together tons of different takes from
source material. Or he's sitting parts of his tracks that
don't change, the audio files, synced and sequenced next to
synths programmed realtime. Like that wonderful sweeping
bassline in windowlicker. Think that's wavetable synthesis
there. Windowlicker is a perfect track to analyze in
soundforge. Then compare it to the windowlicker demo on the
Japanese import. Same sounds less dsp, bassline doesn't
sweep like the original. Look at any aphex track in
Soundforge. Real eye opener.... Ok, You can make fun of me
now....

I don't think Aphew Twin works *that* hard on his music. Of
course he does a lot of work to make the music 'come alive'
in the studio, but I think the music itself flows out of him
naturally. The ideas just come out, and then he works on the
production quite a bit until it sounds fluid and kickass.
That's just how I picture him in my mind.

Some musicians seem to do a lot of work on the actual music
before they come up with anything decent. This seems to be
the excact opposite for Aphex.

How would you know that at all? Squarepusher mentioned
richard spent 3 hours making a sinlge snare sound.

what i love the most is each of the tunes he releases is
different to others, each song stands out for something...
he surely is extremly gifted, but im also pretty certain he
spends way more time creating music than most of other
artists - so he's probably really using just the best tunes
to release (unfortunately) - i think he's always doing
something related to music, music is his life...
