WOW !!!!!!!! at last somebody got this album!!!
*jumps with joy*
Funkmaster, i'm sure you 'll have a wonderful time discovering their music.
you might get 'Black Market' next... or 'Mysterious Traveller'.
but frankly, each of their albums is different and special. you simply can't go wrong with this awesome band. good luck !

yeah, i agree.
but i'd say their earlier albums are amazing as well, though less accessible than those they released with Jaco... they are so special, especially the first two.

i'd say Tom's bass parts on Feed Me Weird Things sound like Jaco's ones! :)
just compare these songs:
The Swifty - Havona Windscale 2 - Barbary Coast (from the 'Black Market' album)
that's probably why i don't enjoy Feed Me Weird Things as much as Sq's other releases... his style on a few tracks is rather imitative and influences are too obvious.

but going back to 'Heavy Weather'...
actually, it's a good starting point to get into WR. this album is considered to be their most accessible release, and yeah may be it really is... it's a solid work, and Jaco was really good, but there are several albums released earlier that are definitely better in some ways.
if you hear the first two, 'Weather Report' and 'I Sing the Body Electric', you'll be surprised to find that they are TOTALLY different from HW. it's a stuff that is much nore of a Davis-style and free jazz, which makes it so special.
Sweetnighter and Mysterious Traveller are absolutely amazing albums i think.
also, there is a very good 'Live and Unreleased' compilation, a collection of tracks recorded live from 1975 - 1983 and released last year. each time i listen to it i feel that Weather Report on stage is SOMETHING. one of my fav CDs ever.
so i guess you've got much to explore :)

hehe... I just kept hearing the name Weather Report mentioned as an influence on so many different groups, and cds... and I saw someone mention this album in a thread I started asking for suggestions on albums to get... it was probably you who suggested it! ;)
I read up on em, and figured I'd give em a try... I had read this was the best place to start, and it's excellent... love it... I also hear a lot of Steely Dan in here... it's probably the other way around... that these guys influenced Steely Dan... but who knows, both this album and Aja were released in 1977... it's cool though... that's the first band I thought of when I listened to the album first, and I'm a huge Steely Dan fan, so it's all good...
it's funny though, I bought this album, and the Bladerunner Soundtrack (also Plaids Double Figure) and both these albums are similar in the sense that they transport me to a certain place... this album is so tied to home for me... it's like jazz can never be tied to anywhere but North America... Bladerunner however is this futuristic landscape... both albums are great in their own ways!

i'm really glad you like' HW'.
btw, i know you're a Steely Dan fan... i haven't heard much of their stuff, actually. but from what i've heard i can say it's quite nice but it simply fails to satisfy me as WR's stuff does, sorry ;)
i can say that i decided to give WR a listen after i've seen Jaco's name mentioned in a few Squarepusher's interviews... so first i got some of Jaco Pastorius stuff, then i started digging into Weather Report. i used to think that it would we hard to find music that would satisfy me as my fav electronic stuff... luckily, i was wrong! here with WR i found even more than i could ever imagine.
btw, there is a very good site containing detailed info on each Weather Report release, probably you know it... HERE are a few interesting facts about 'Heavy Weather'. hope you'll enjoy it

well yeah, Steely Dan is pretty poppy... but it still blends lots of jazz elements, into a rock format... I love em personally, and consider Aja one of my favorite albums... and hey, check out the title track Aja, Wayne Shorter plays on it... :)

yeah, Aja is a sweet song... it has song kick ass drum work on it too... and, it also has a bit of a latin flavour to it, which I've noticed on this Heavy Weather album... yet another similarity between the two...
Deacon Blues and Home at Last are two other sweet songs from Aja... I mentioned the title track cause it featured Wayne Shorter and figured that would spark your interest, but imo Deacon Blues is the best song on there... the whole album is sweet though... it's a definitely summer album!

I hope you've listened... I'd be really interested in hearing what you thought of that song Aja... I just listened to it, and it's so yummy... the sax solo, the drumming, everything about it is perfect... the whole album is perfect!! I just love this album, it never fails to make me happy!! It's oneof the best in my opinion!!
